Blizzard of 2016 - What to do? New post 84!

The multi-lane roads have been plowed, but only one lane is open on many of them.

Saw a woman on The Climate Channel (TWC) in NYC who said there is no place to park. They plowed the roads, not the parking spots. In fact, many of the parking spots were dumped on.

Well, this is what happens on narrow city residential streets. (And in suburban cul-de-sacs as well, for that matter.) The snow has to go somewhere, and it ends up getting moved from the travel lanes to the parking spaces. The only way to clear both areas is to move the snow off the street completely, but that's not realistic, as there are only limited resources to move it, and limited places where you can put it.

This is why condescending posts from folks who live in rural areas about how well they handle heavy snow irk me: it's an apples-to-oranges comparison. Three feet of snow falling in a sparsely-populated area is not the same as three feet of snow falling in a major city.

I love winter, I love cold weather, and I love snow...but this was not a fun or pretty snowstorm. It was ugly and brutal and deadly. I am just glad it wasn't worse...

You know...I'm not diminishing the effects of that storm. Been there and done it so many times. My daughter is there and a lot of friends. With a bit of patience and humor it will get better. It ain't the end of the world for everyone. Seems now days the weather is sensationalized just for the purpose of selling more stuff. Before the storm Lowe's and Home Desperate sold generators snowblowers and shovels. Listen to the news now and there is still a state of emergency. My daughter and many friends live there..have talked with them the last few days. None are in emergency mode. They pretty much just figure it is time to dig out and get on with normalcy. The news outlets?? Not so much.
