Blizzard of 2016 - What to do? New post 84!

Well it went above and beyond expectations here. They called for 12 - 24 from Friday night to late Saturday. Saturday morning. At 10 am it was already at 20 inches and no signs of slowing down.

In my area, the "official" snow totals are measured at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, which is a 40 mile drive southwest of here. While that official total is about 20" right now, in my condo community, the snow on our roads is between knee-high and waist-high to me, and I'm 6'3" tall.

I went out earlier today to clear my heat pump and make sure our emergency exit doors were clear, but now I'm in for the day. My county government has issued a press release advising that there have been 4 cardiac arrests today in the county due to snow shoveling, and they are suggesting people be careful. I think that's good advice, and I intend to follow it.

Although the fatal shootings that have been plaguing Baltimore are on hold for the moment, police have made several arrests today of people breaking into pharmacies to steal drugs...some things never change. There was also a fatal fire in Baltimore this morning, and I am reminded of all the times over the years that we responded to fires and other emergencies in weather like this...it's sure good to be retired now!

It ain't over yet, folks...we are supposed to get about another 2" per hour for the next eight hours, before the snow tapers off tonight. Wish us luck! :)

Ain't it the truth. Not having to go out in this is great. Luckily where I live now(we get less rain than some deserts) we get little snow. But what we have is here from when it falls till usually April or so. Now up in the mountains where I hunt elk..20 ft is not unusual. Beemer...is the wind blowing yet? My daughter lives across the pond at the edge of Delaware. She told me that it may be quitting over there but they have a couple of feet easily.

Bill Bates - beautiful photo's. Just finished round two of shoveling, boy does this bite the big one.

Thanks, I don't shovel snow. I run the snow blower and Wanda shovels. Some days it does suck when you get to do it over and over again during the storm. Oh and then plow comes by and you get to shovel out the driveway all over again because they pushed the snow back into the drive way.

Normally we go to the Y on Sunday for a good workout.
Tomorrow, I think we'll be getting plenty of exercise shoveling out.
Afterwards we're planning on hot chocolate in our basement jacuzzi.

What do you do at a time like this, you ask?

Why, you run to the store and buy all the milk, bread, and toilet paper you can carry, of course! :D

Sorry, it's an old Northeast PA joke. ;)

Woke up to 14"-16", hard to tell exactly, winds pretty stout and
Snow is drifting. Some hill tops I can see from house are bare
from being wind swept. I plodded 1/4 mi up to highway and
bummed ride into town with neighbor on his tractor. One store
town, bread& milk - gone. Wouldn't have bothered to go but
wanted to make it to PO. They are in a tizzy, a lot of the holler
roads are drifted in deep. We are suppose to be back up in 40's
Mon. That will probably cause all the creeks to flood. So might
be catching up on loading for a few days. Spring is around the
corner!!

For those who think this storm is no big deal, or wouldn't be a big deal in some other part of the country...

The mid-Atlantic coastline is being hammered...there is no more beach in Bethany Beach, Delaware... https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...=33360b045957f04d9b925636b23b0234&oe=5743DED8

The fishing pier in Ocean City, Maryland, has been destroyed... https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...=74f327ad2891aad2712110835de58335&oe=5748907C

Here is what that fishing pier looked like before this storm... https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...=c94a53ec48dcac660c0b5fd28cf0c32c&oe=5730E39F

It's easy to get rid of several feet of snow when you live in open country; what do you do with it on a residential street in Baltimore? An old BCFD friend of mine, who is still on the job, lives here...https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...=55371ea5627e89ba229afa249ba1df39&oe=573ECC5A

Another photo of my friend's street... https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...=334b39ab75e994c87976766456afdf39&oe=5744D3E8

WBAL television in Baltimore just announced that the roof of the Safeway grocery store in my town has collapsed...and there have been 4 cardiac arrests in my county today from people trying to shovel this heavy, wet, deep snow... :(

I love winter and I love snow...but this is no fun at all.

No joke!

This storm is for real.

More than 2' in my 'hood. Way more. . Now wind is picking up. 27F. Overnight will be 12F

Many roads yet to be plowed. And they are NOT secondary streets.

No worries for me but others seriously affected.
