We play just around the yard. There are a couple of courts nearby, but haven't tried them yet. It is a fun game, kind of slow moving, but then again, so am I.

A real Bocce Ball court will have a grapevine above it covering the entire court, also lights for night games. Most important, a bottle of chianti and pasta, meatballs and sausages to snack on.

Conversations with a lot of hand movement is a must while playing.

A section of the court is set aside to store all types of weapons, these are not allowed while playing.

Otherwise, you are not playing Bocce.

As a kid I use to watch all the old timers playing, and that was the exact setup.

My family plays it regularly at summertime gatherings. I am partly disabled and can't do the walking around that it requires, or I would certainly play and enjoy it too.

As an "old fart" we have a Bocce League that plays every weekend during the summer.

Slow moving, a lot of BSing, good friends, and good Dago Red.

You don't need a court. Just cut your lawn short and play. You can drink wine if you want, but bocce goes great with beer and cigars.

Bocce?

I once met a World Class Bocce player. He told me his most worthy opponents were Portugeuse.....????

I used to play with several of my Italian buddy's . It was a lot of fun and didn't cost a lot as the betting was small time. I have not play'd in several years as one of the main guy's has passed. But this post brought back a lot of good memory's!!!!!!

For about 3 years one of the guys on my aircrew carried a set of bocce balls every where we went.

I may be just one of a very small number of people who have played bocce ball in the dirt of Berbera, Somalia, among other places around the world.

Every summer my wife and I spend a couple of weeks in Boston. In downtown Boston there are some fine Bocce courts. I will take the train to Boston Common and then run around town till I want to blow a while. At that point I stop by those courts and watch the men (mostly) play. Later when our family goes camping, I am a daily participant at the Bocce games... and the matches that follow. My wife and daughters very much enjoy the game. From time to time they have been known to win tournaments. And occasionally even this old dog has been known to "find a bone!" When that happens, there is always great rejoicing among fellow family members as the games played by the men are often very competitive. There are rivalries between some of the families are of long (+20 years) standing.

Back in the 50's dad used to take us to a family resort called Chillura's (sp) in the Catskills. Bocce was the sport for the men. Everyday, Joe the handyman, would water down the courts, then smooth them out with a big roller. The courts were surrounded with wood planks. The walls were essential to the game. Carom shots off the sides and backstops at each end were a huge part of the game.

We kids were allowed to watch, but we couldn't set foot on any of the courts until the men were done for the day. Of course it got tougher to play as Joe would put away the good balls, especially the prized pallino (SP). He would put out sets of warped and disfigured balls for the "amateurs" to use. The best part used to be watching the arguments over whose ball was closest to the pallino. Someone would always produce 2 pieces of straw to use as a homemade slide rule for measuring the distances between the balls. I loved it! :D

I have never played, but after reading the posts it sounds like a fun game. I will have to go try it out some time at the club in town.
