I'll be in the market for a new pair of boots before the fall, and was wondering what brands you all prefer? I've had cheap pairs in the past that have not held up well, and am looking for something that is comfortable, and durable.

I'm looking for a full 8-9" pair, lace up, water proof, steel toe.

I've been looking at the Redwings, Chippewas, Timberlands, Wolverines, etc... I know you get what you pay for, but I'd like some schooling before dropping a couple hundred on a new pair.

Hit me with knowledge!

I was issued Danner Arcadia's when I was "on the job" I still wear The Danner boot today and there are many styles to choose from based on your needs and location of residence. Their warranty is outstanding in my opinion, and I would hope you check them out before your final choice is made.

My opinion, others may vary.......

Have had good luck with Chippewas some are US made and some in China. Make sure you get a pair with the sewn welt not glued.

IMO, stay away from the Wolverine Multi-Shox if you are on any rocky or gravel ground. I had a pair for about two weeks until I punctured a couple of the little squares and then they would make noise with every step. It sounded like I rapidly blowing up and releasing the air from a balloon.

I have had excellent service from Danner. The most comfortable (for me) have been Redback Boot, which are Australian made. I have a few pairs of the slip on and a pair of lace up. They have held up well...

I buy Rocky's ...they are a bit pricy but have never let me down. Rubber for the winter and woods are Irish Setter,,,,

I'm 55 and on construction sites all day long, and lately no matter what I wear my feet are aching at the end of the day. I started wearing tennis shoes and they wear the most comfortable but not very professional looking and they would get ragged quickly. Then I started wearing Dr. Air Martens boots and my feet were very thankful, and they also give good support and last a long time.

I've been abusing a pair of Wolverines for about 3 years now and they aren't showing any sign of wearing out for many more years. of course that aren't nearly as pretty when new but they are work boots and have only seen polish about 3 times total. About the only complaint I can make is the steel toes don't cover up the lacing as I found out when I dropped a bar of steel on the laces. Figures I'd manage to drop that bar on the one area not protected, sometimes I think I have a PHD in Clumsy. Left a pretty good hemotoma for a couple of hours and a technicolor foot for a couple of weeks but no bones were chipped or broken. As for the steel toe cap, it is totally impervious to being run over by a golf cart, the boss parked on my foot and I didn't feel a thing until I tried to take a step.

I'm not sure what your use is but, I've pairs of both Timberlands, Wolverines. I got mine for elk hunting and while the Wolverines are basically new as they were only worn twice, the Timberlands are well broken in. The reason for abandoning the Wolverines was that they squeek! You can't hunt elk in boots that announce every step taken.

Both are well made, have good insulation, lace up nice and are almost identical. It was only the leather squeek that I couldn't make go away that caused me to change boots.

I've had all kinds over the years but the ones that felt the best were Carolina Comfort's.

Double H Boots make something like what you are looking for. American made. I have a pair and they the best boots I've ever had. I've been told by other people who wear them that they will never wear out, very solidly made.

They can be a little pricey, but seem worth the price.

I've had bad luck with Bates brand 'tactical' style, side zipper boots. (I believe Bates is somehow associated with Wolverine). I bought a pair for shooting SR matches and only wore them about once or twice a month for a couple of years. When the soles came loose Bates had me return them for inspection and offered a similar replacement pair at no cost.

When the soles on those replacement boots started coming loose I emailed Bates about getting another replacement pair. This time I was told that they could not replace a replacement pair (?) but offered a 20% discount on a new pair or a maximum of $25 towards the repair of the boots by a local cobbler.

The cobbler fixed the second pair, and I still wear them, but its my last pair of that brand that I'd have.
