I bought this one this morning for $400.00.

Serial: 167904

Most likely an importer parked it but there are no import markings....I checked under the stocks too.

DSCN5665.webp

DSCN5671.webp

It's all matching except the stocks.

DSCN5667.webp

DSCN5668.webp

DSCN5669.webp

The crane and star match too.

Looking at my book it says the US Army serial range is 1-169959. Of course the serial style on the butt is totally different.

Did they ship leftover M1917s to Brazil?

The revolver is in nice shape with a strong bore.....It also came with two boxes of .45 Auto-Rim....A nice bonus.

Undelivered guns and parts were leftover when the WWI contracts were canceled. Since yours has the eagle acceptance stamps on the cylinder & barrel it seems likely that it was either unfinished or simply undelivered at the end of WWI. IIRC S&W used a number of the leftovers for post war commercial production (some in other calibers) and some of them were used for Brazilian contract deliveries as well.

That's about what i figured.

That is a nice looking piece you picked up! And the price was quite a bargain, especially with a couple boxes of .45AR included. I would have been thrilled to pick that up at that price. The 1917 is a pleasure to shoot, too.

I've had other Brazilian Contract M1917s over the years but they were either pitted to hell and gone or had no finish, rough bores, etc.. I just figured since this one is in good mechanical shape it would be worth having.

Buy some Red Dot powder and 200 grain LSW's and you will be a happy camper with those AR empties. I bought several thousand Starline AR cases to go with the few hundred Peters cases that my pap gave me when I was a kid .

A bargain at $400 in todays market . I gave $250 for mine but that was a number of years back .

Question:

Since it does not fit into the known serial range I wonder if it's a first or second issue?
