My favorite revolver my S&W 34-1 that I shoot extensively, broke yesterday ( during a shooting match of course!- a kind fellow shooter let me borrow a gun to finish)

First the trigger failed to return forward a couple times, then the gun went dead, not rotating the cylinder.

I suspected some sort of spring failure and believe I am correct.

When I pulled the side plate I found a small section of spring material ( for reference about the size of a stick of IMR powder just a touch longer)

When the gun is held downward the hand operates normally.
When turned muzzle up the cylinder doesn’t turn, so obviously the hand is falling backward not staying put.

I am betting the tiny spring section I found came off the hand and torsion spring.

Unfortunately trying to find a solution without troubling people for help by reading the FAQ’s didn’t help, as the pictures associated with them is not coming up for me.

Few questions:
Is the spring a standard type regardless of caliber?
If my thoughts are correct how do you get the tiny pin that holds that spring out of the trigger ?
Source for part?

Thank you all in advance

Few questions:

Is the spring a standard type regardless of caliber? Yes, the spring is the same regardless of caliber.

If my thoughts are correct how do you get the tiny pin that holds that spring out of the trigger? You use a "tiny punch" that fits the pin size.:rolleyes::D I believe it is .050". The pin is a press fit, not loose in the hole. Thank you all in advance

Source for part? Call S&W customer service and tell them what you need (hand spring), 800-331-0852 They will probably send you one at no charge. They will want to know your serial number!

Tap the hand spring torsion spring pin out by using a 1/8" pin punch and block. You won't need to completely remove the pin; just tap it out enough to remove the old torsion spring and install the new. After tapping the pin back in, be sure that the pin ends don't extend beyond the trigger surface (flush) so they won't drag on the frame or sideplate. I believe all J-frame hand torsion springs are common except for newer MIM triggers.

My old parts lists show a different J-frame torsion spring part number than the part number for K-L-N frames. There are typically quite a few J-frame parts available in EBAY.

The pin that secures the pigtail hand spring in the model 34 is .040" in diameter. Consequently, I suggest cutting a short piece of piano wire secured in a hemostat, or a small drill bit shank (# 61) to drive the pin over far enough to remove the broken part. The pin can be driven out in either direction.

Take note of the orientation of the broken spring prior to removal. The hand spring part number is 07080.

Thanks all! Just what I needed to know! Now to ordering the parts - is it better to go to someone like numrich or S&W directly?

Don't try a 1/8" punch. That's way to large diameter. The pin is less than 1/16" diameter.

mechanical things break, but i dont hear that happening often.
forum members always come thru!
