Browning B92 vs Rossi R92.

For those interested in recoil pads. Galco makes one that uses velco to wrap around the end of the buttstock. I have one - somewhere - that I used to use on Browning 1886 Lightweight. It worked well, and no permanent alteration of the rifle.

As far as the Browning/Rossi thing, I answered that for the OP on a different forum. :) Loooove my Browning 92 in .357. Years ago I had Dale Story's shop smooth out the trigger a little, install a Lyman 66 aperture sight, and place a filler in the rear sight dovetail.

I just went and looked that up. $120????? Holy moly.

At the bottom of the blurb about the pad it had this little statement.

>Caution: do not store gun with recoil pad attached.<

Any ideas on why? Because the leather will damage the gun's finish? Or the gun standing in the corner with all of the weight on the pad will damage the pad?

No idea, but I never stored a gun with the pad on. Just a guess, I used to have a Winchester 94 .30-30 Centennial with a rifle buttplate you could have used to cut firewood. I had to be really careful about putting it far out enough on my shoulder that it didn't dig into my bod. The pad I may still have is a nice brown color, the one currently on their website looks much darker.

This has been a very useful and informative thread. I like .357 carbine/revolver combinations a lot. We own a farm in the very rural south where these firearms are pretty handy. I have a Ruger M77/357 and a Marlin 1894. These make great deer rifles on the farm. I may have to pickup a Rossi in .357.

The Galco pad looks identical to this one that I bought from Amazon - Tourbon recoil pad. It was $25 when I ordered it in 2023, now $33. I put it on the .45 Colt Rossi R92 that I gave to the oldest son. The pad helped mitigate recoil and added a little length of pull.

I have an R92 357 Carbine in 357. I don't have a Browning M92, but have owned other Browning Miroku rifles that had spectacular fit and finish. If looking for a safe queen, go with the Browning. However, I bought my Rossi for shooting in the field, where scratches and dings are expected. I'm gradually making some updates on the Rossi, but function is relatively smooth and reliable, it will only improve over time with use.

The magazine tube spring has been shortened, the follower cap has been replaced, and the safety will soon disappear. I have a combination optic rail with adjustable peep sight that may be installed, if I can't find a reasonably priced tang peep sight.

Dollar for dollar, my Rossi is a working field gun that won't bring tears if the finish is marred.

Have you considered replacing the safety with a peep sight from StevesGunz? Here's what it looks like on my Rossi .357. I've also used it on a .45 Colt and .454 Casull R92s.

The buttstock cover I ordered is coming from a guy named Jon Klein.....his business is called Gunstock Covers. Made specifically to fit my R92 stock I think I paid $80 and that includes tax and shipping. Took just a little over a month from when I sent him a check to when he had it made and shipped it. I don't shoot SASS it's just a utility rifle and shooter. Most commonly I shoot a 140 gr coated TC bullet at about 1200 fps. It also shoots the 158 gr XTP HP with a full dose of 296 very accurately. I drilled and tapped my reciever and installed the Williams 5D 94/36 and added a front sight made by Skinner sights with a dovetail made specifically for the R92. Yes I removed the silly bolt safety Rossi puts on these rifles.

A .357 rifle and handgun combo has been a favorite of mine for a long time out on the farm. I usually keep the revolver loaded with .38 Special and .357's in the rifle. Hard to beat this combo in a rural setting.

I had this made by Jon Klein, owner of Gunstock Covers in Michigan. Took about six weeks. I paid $80 and that included tax and shipping. I dropped in two 1/4" sorbothane pads in before installing it on my stock. Really easy guy to do business with. Contacted him via email then sent him a personal check and he went from there. I needed to get that steel buttplate off my bum shoulder and it worked out really good. I did all the slicking up the rifle needed myself. I also drilled and tapped the reciever for the Williams 5D peep.
