Browning Hi-Power as a carry gun

I have not owned a Hi Power in a while. If I were looking to carry one today I would go with either a:
Choice #1 Lobo Avenger with Inner Slide Shield, and Detail Boned.
Choice #2 would be a Lobo IWB with Inner Slide Shield made form the optional horse hide.

One or the other, or better yet both holsters should make carrying one no problem at all.

A 1911 is very carryable, the Hi Power is close enough to a 1911 in both size and weight that they should carry the same.

I am not fond of IWB holsters I could never get comfortable with one. But I have been toying with the idea of one for the Browning. I figure it is thin enough and might just work. I do loke Lobo leather I figure the IWB would be better for concealment in the long run.

I will figure out something out real soon.

True of the originals with the humped feed ramps. I have never had a malfunction in my MK2 or MK3's with any of the JHPs I have tried (Golden Saber, Gold Dot, Winchester JHP, Ranger, and PDX-1, Remington 115gr JHPs that come in the yellow box), but my HPs have the straight feed ramps.
Also, some of the older magazines are reputed to work more reliably when loaded with only 12 rounds instead of 13. Never had an issue with Browning or Mec-Gar 13 round mags myself.
Verifying that your gun, magazines, and ammo will work reliably together is always good advice, regardless.
 
Sadly due to Steve's untimely death the web site has not been upgraded.......Are his books still available???? If so how does one buy them???Any help would be appreciated..........

I would make the High Power

a primary carry gun except for the fact my primary off-duty pistol is a 1970s Colt Combat Commander .45 acp that has been treated to an overhaul by David Sams of Sams Custom Gunworks in Virginia. I've owned the Colt since 1982 and it was time for a visit to the spa. New sights (Novak, gold bead front sight) 4.5# trigger, and a 22 step reliability check list.

Back to the High Power for carry. I currently own 2; a Canadian INGLIS from WWII and a 1952 vintage Israeli Police Pistol. While neither one are beauty queens, the both function quite well:

I shot two magazines through each gun from 10 yards. The Inglis shoots a tighter group but either gun were flawless and served their purposes. To paraphrase Frank Perdue's (of Perdue Chickens) comercial where he was touting 1/2 roasting chicken (propped up from behind with popsicle sticks after roasting) "It looks a little funny, but is shoots just as well as a whole one!"

I have some Federal 147 grain JHPs that feed/function quite well in both of my High Powers; neither gun has every given me an iota of a problem.

Most of the holsters that I use to carry my 1911s are just the right size for a High Power; if anything, even though they are hi-cap stacked 9mm guns they conceal quite well. I like them.

Mine is a hard chrome simple simon with fixed night sights and thin grips. Hard to beat.
 
Bob the old tooled holster is unmarked but who ever the craftsman was he did a good job.
 
I carried a Browning Hi-Power for many years, in a Bianchi shoulder holster(X-15), and also carried it "Mexican" style in my waistband back in the day when I worked homicide in a City police department. Back then as long as you could qualify with it, you could carry it. The ammo back then was no where near as advanced as today's offerings. I have a Browning Hi-Power sitting in my safe and would not hesitate to carry one again. Great reliable weapon, that shoots like pointing your finger.
 
I have 2 40's and a 9. Frankly, I prefer the 40's. They gobble up Fed-Spec. Maximum Effort 155's and beg for more. This is the load that was known for tearing up Glocks.

The Browning "Factory" Magazines for the .40 have a well designed ejection assist that clears the pistol positively.

The old trick of polishing the front face of the magazine body where the disconnect bears on it has helped the trigger pull considerably.

I would carry a BHP without hesitation.

I nearly bought a beautiiful, nickled, adj. sighted BHP in the late 70s but came to the realization that I wasn't going to be comfortable carrying it cocked and locked. Still wish I had bought it to shoot, however. One of the prettiest semis I ever saw.
 
The BHP, like the 1911, can be equiped with the "safety fast shooting system" which, in my view is a much better idea than cocked and locked, and would make aHi-Power a very effective CC piece in my view. Flapjack.

I guess I'm going to show my ignorance...But what is a "Safety Fast System" for a BHP I would really like to know as I am a fan of the BHP..

The SFS system in a nut shell replaces the hammer. You chamber a round like normal then push the back of the hammer forward. The hammer then "drops" forward and the safety locks in the up postion. To fire you push the safety off and the hammer then goes to full cocked and you fire like normal. It's offered by Cylinder and Slide. I had one on my 1911 and it worked fine.

Thank you, I have never had C&S do anything for me but I certainly have herd of them especially one of their finishes..I will look up their info on their site...Thanks again...Love this forum...Somebody will know something about almost anything... Seems like I remember a Semi auto I think it was Dawoo or something like that. It looked like a SW 39 but had a strange type of hammer so you could carry it with hammer down but with single action trigger pull.

I carried a Hi-Power a lot when I was a reserve officer in the early 1980s (off duty) and shot a lot of IPSC matches with it.
It was always superbly reliable and out of perhaps a half dozen of them I've owned I've seen very little ever go wrong with one.
Best I can tell its just as viable now as it was then if you want to carry a full size pistol.
A friend once said "theres different than a Browning Hi-Power but not really better" and I agree with that.
Besides I was at a skeet shooting class one day with it in an inside waist band holster and a guy actually walked up to me and said "do you know your pistol is cocked?". You can't put a price on something like that.
 
I've carried a lot this HP practical (9 mm). My brother doesn't like its weight, compared to his Glock 19 but for me, it feels quite comfortable in this IWB holster.

Of course. That isn't oil around the grips, it is pitting under the blue. Considering there were only 68,000 pre war guns that were primarily sold outside the US, I am happy to have one. It had a hard life in China I am told. I paid low shooter money for it....and shoot it I do.

This '62 vintage has beautiful vintage FN blue, and yes, I know those are not factory sights.

.40 BHP

Hi guys (& gals)
I usually carry a snub on my ankle off duty, but occasionally I carry a .40 BHP w/ SFS in a strong side Jack Slide. I got the .40, cause I like the bigger rnd, as well as the fact I carry a .40 Glunk:p at work. I'll tell you a slick 9mm IWB weapon to carry is a P7, PSP. Little smaller, flatter then the BHP, and what a shooter!
 
Pooka - I think the P7 PSP would make for a great backup when carrying a High Power!

Of course the Israeli High Power makes a fine companion carry for the Uzi!
 
I've been a shooter/collector for fifty years now and just never had a Browning Hi Power......until Christmas.

Claus left one in my stocking and I can not thank him enough. It is the 75th Anniversary model and my son, daughter and wife got it for me.

I had just been talking to my son that I really Jones'ed for a P35 but just had never got one. He found one that CDNN was selling and ordered it for me.

Took it to the range yesterday and it performed 100%....but it is too pretty to use.....it has that high luster, highly polished bluing.

I've used so many of the "modern" pistols lately I was not ready for the "old school" single action, drop the mag to close the slide, etc.

It will be one of my favorites.....but my carry piece is still, and will always be my M60 S&W snubby.
