This is what I am dealing with, Bubba "fixed" this King Cockeyed hammer on an Outdoorsman that I am going to restore. Thank God he didn't have his big hammer with him that day!!!

Also, previous owner modified the gun to single action only so I am in need of either a sear and spring/pin or a complete pre war hammer...the quest continues...

Steelslaver, I tried to send this to you by way of a PM but it won't let me post the pictures!

Some WW2 Victory model hammers are often seen for sale on the auction site. Would that work on a prewar gun? The thing is they have the typical high thumbpiece so it would not be as nice as that hammer for cocking.

A an Outdoorsman is an N frame a K frame victory or other would not work.

Does anyone know for sure that a 1817 hammer would?

A 1917 hammer would probably work. I’m not sure mssrs Smith and Wesson made hammers in 1817. Seriously, there used to be lots of surplus hammers for the 1917, but alas, they’re disappearing too. It looks like King did his usual professional job on the “Cockeyed” hammer before Billy Bob took it to Bubba’s House of Guns for “improvement”. Sad! :(

Joe, I just checked my S prefix 1917, which was built post war from parts S&W bought back from the Army. I believe these prewar hammers will work in your gun. The real difference between my gun and a regular 1917 is the post war guns had the sliding hammer block fitted (S prefix). Obviously a King cockeyed hammer would be best, but good luck finding one of those for sale.

Someone help old Gunsquirrel get that target gun running DA.

Bubba should just stick to Shrimp, and leave the guns alone...
