I would say that the intent was to deal with the problem of the
extractor star hitting those early grips. What you are seeing is a
non-factory implementation of the so-called extractor cut.

Those can be fixed/repaired. Send them to Keith Brown, and I think
you will be very pleased.

But restorable, no?

I have seen decent, used (but original) condition, Cokes sell in the $300-400 range in the past year.
This type of restoration is way out of my league. IMO, they would have to have wood spliced on top and bottom and completely restored...........I don't personally see how it would ever be "money well spent".
If they were numbered to a rare gun, that might be another story.

I did the same thing, not to cokes. when people would ,rightly chastise me for "messing up" a pristine factory stock, i would act like they were idolators and say, they're my dadgum grips and it saw them up just like it i want them. If they way they come don't help me shoot better what good are they ?" I meant some of it.
i'll give two more dollars than dave and pay shipping.

Most likely, "Bubba" modified those grips back when they were just a set of grips - as in the grips that came on his revolver from the factory. As in, long before they achieved the CULT status they have today. Nice grips, but there was a problem - you couldn't get a full stroke on the ejector rod. So, he fixed the problem - on what might well have been a working gun. Considering that those grips are over 40 years old, I doubt the gun was bought as an investment piece. There was a problem with the grips, so he made the grips funtion correctly. In his place, I would have done the same thing .........
For what it's worth, I work in the Biotech industry in an engineering capacity, so I don't think I'm in the "Bubba" clan.
For me, it's function over form. Doesn't matter how good an object looks, if it impedes the overall function !
