Bucheimer and Bucheimer-Clark holster fit charts - 1953-1975 & later

Another one from Canada: this Federal Man for a 3 inch J frame revolver is stamped AMM-303WLH.

What does AMM mean? We don't know.

303 = 3 inch Chief Special
W = Basketweave
LH = Left Hand
The number stamped on the paddle is the thumb break patent number.

A fun one indeed. Where the AMM is positioned in the number is traditionally reserved for the colour: 'B' for black, and a blank for brown, then the model number, then the suffixes you mention. I have many other natural finish J.M.B.s (this one is the mid-1970s mark for the company) and none have such a prefix, esp the Sloans.

As noted elsewhere, this is a continuing work in progress. It's gone on so long that I am in the classic position of having forgotten more than I'll ever know - or something like that. I have to look again each time I go back. Credit to the many who have contributed especially Red Nichols and John Witty. (Buy their book!!)

How to read Bucheimer and Bucheimer-Clark holster codes:

Generally the first numbers and letters stamped on the back of the holster designate the model of the holster; the numbers after the dash designate the size. Letter prefixes and suffixes indicate options, such as color - if different than brown - black , in later years Clarino [C], russet [R], lining [L], no lining , floral carving [F], basket stamping [W], left hand [LH], and a new discovery - [E] for elastic straps.

With a few exceptions, this is not a chart of model numbers. Too many for that. The chart is searchable for the fit number.

To find what handgun fits a holster, search only for the numbers after the dash. A few exceptions, like the Hank Sloan and Pacemaker, may not have a dash and require letters and/or numbers in addition to the numbers for the correct search result.

AND THEN -- the fit code numbers are not unique. The same number may appear with several different handguns depending upon the era and the model of holster. Inference may be required. A large holster for a handgun with a long barrel probably does not fit a Chief Special.

One other twist repeated from below:

For late Bucheimer holsters with a multi-digit system as on the FBI Concealer holsters 01-604-16. (3 inch Model 13)

The first two numbers:
01 - holster
02 - belt
03 - clubs and saps
04 - ammunition and magazine carriers

The second series = the model number

The third series = holster fit code

Inserting this explanation in August 2020 ---

Bucheimer and Bucheimer-Clark were sister companies.

It's all very muddled, even after looking for corporate records. Red Nichols has an as-much-as-we-know summary in one of his recent blog entries.

J. M. Bucheimer Co (Frederick, Maryland)
An old line company dating to the turn of the century (that other one) as a holster company. Bucheimer ended in the late 1980's, acknowledging guesswork because of our lack of official records.

Bucheimer-Clark Corp, 6314 S. Broadway, Los Angeles 3, California.
A combination of Bucheimer and the LA based Clark holster company - dating to about 1920 - incorporated in 1959. Dissolved in 1970 when both came under the Tandy corporation. The last B-C catalog we have is dated 1978.

And then there were holsters marked Thompson, Thompson-Clark and Clark (Anaheim) using the B-C designs. Red was acquainted with Thompson as an LA company attempting inroads into the 70's police market. Then holsters from the other two have popped up recently.

Jan. 2021: Also now we've found Clark (Coachella, CA) which might explain the coach symbol!! More to come.

A company recently using the B-C name is not related to the others.

Jan. 2021: adding a 1971 Bucheimer fit chart in a pdf.
Oct. 2021: more additions; updated attached pdf.
May, 2022: added code for Colt Diamondback and updated attachments
July, 2022: added Ruger DA Security Six revolvers and Sig-Sauer 220
June, 2024: additions and corrections

======================================
======================================

(Start of original post, much modified, from 2012)

Never thought there would be a demand for this, but apparently there is. My catalog doesn't show a unified model number chart, so I had to construct one.

PS ...and edit... --- As noted by others, Bucheimer size markings seem to have been changed multiple times.

Multiple additions and corrections have been made since the original post. Now into ... 2024. Both Bucheimer and Bucheimer-Clark sizes are listed.
The PDF lists attached have been updated and modified.

Generally the first numbers/letters stamped on the back designate the model of the holster; the numbers after the dash designate the size. Letters indicate options such as color, lining, carving and basket stamping. Also LH for left hand...

Correct. We've not found C-1 in any chart, but there you are with one.

That comes from the discussion about your post on March 5 with a holster fitting a 2 1/2 barrel length but a cylinder pocket too short for .357.

Clark - Thompson & Coachella dating

As previously noted, the Bucheimer, Clark and Bucheimer-Clark history has a Thompson sub-folder with former B-C executive Cecil A. Thompson making Thompson branded holsters in a factory in Northridge, California until his death at age 61 in 1972. (Wray Thompson and his son Jon continued with Tandy; maybe all related.)

Observed Thompson holsters are marked with a Coach stamp with "T" in the door of the coach. That Coach logo also appears on holsters found with the Clark Leather Goods name and also the Clark name with "COACHELLA, CAL" under the logo. I file them as "Clark Coachella" and "Clark Coach T." The original E.E. Clark company ceased to exist in 1959. Some of the Clark sons may have been involved with this Clark; Earl Clark is known to have worked for other companies, including Safariland.

(I left out holsters marked Clark Anaheim, Cal somehow fit in the mix.)

Add to the mix that Thompson used a BT letter and number system for their holster models. Bucheimer cataloged several higher quality holsters in their BT line with those sharing a Thompson signature profile.

Thompson holsters have their own fit code that we've only partially documented, while the Clark holsters follow the simple Clark fit style with my BT marked Clark Coachella having a slightly more complex code that still can be read as simply .45

We've not found any corporate records for any of the three the way we did for B-C. I found a single Thompson "Stagecoach" magazine ad from 1972.

All the above has previously been reported in this thread. I've gone on far longer than originally intended, but this saves readers having to sort through all of the previous posts.

What's new is three "Clark Coach T" holsters found with fit markings for pistols introduced in 1984 (Colt Officers ACP), 1988 (AMT .22) and 1990 (Jericho 9 / CZ 75) - showing that Thompson /Clark holsters were made later than previously known.

The hand writing on the bag labels suggests relatively small production numbers.

Any documentation, advertisements or catalogs welcome.

"JERICO" on the bag label but correct spelling is Jericho.

There's a 61-42 currently on ebay that looks very much like the illustration in the '75 catalog. In particular the leather retaining the clip is rough out, and the clip itself appears to be relatively small in comparison to the holster.
attachment.php

So while the text of the '75 catalog states the clip will accomodate 1.75 belts, the illustration may reflect earlier use of clips for 1.25" belts. The stamp is Buchiemer Clark, L.A. Calif. inside an oval.

attachment.php

My guess is these changes weren't considered important enough to call for a new illustration to put in the catalog.

For comparison here's a 61-11 with the later large B logo that was purchased 1980-81.
attachment.php

Also note the leather holding the clip is now smooth side out.

Model number 61 is on page 16 in the 1975 catalog.

John Clark, Portland, Oregon -- not the same company or family

New to me but known to Red - the John Clark Leather Company of Portland, Oregon preceded and was not connected to the California Clarks.

John Clark (1826-1919) -- John Clark Leather Company (1873 - 1929)

Saddle makers with assorted leather products and some holsters.
The snap in the picture is embossed "Clark Portland."

There's a 61-42 currently on ebay that looks very much like the illustration in the '75 catalog. In particular the leather retaining the clip is rough out, and the clip itself appears to be relatively small in comparison to the holster.

So while the text of the '75 catalog states the clip will accomodate 1.75 belts, the illustration may reflect earlier use of clips for 1.25" belts. The stamp is Buchiemer Clark, L.A. Calif. inside an oval.

My guess is these changes weren't considered important enough to call for a new illustration to put in the catalog.

For comparison here's a 61-11 with the later large B logo that was purchased 1980-81.

Also note the leather holding the clip is now smooth side out.

It's essential that collectors understand the eras of the two companies; Bucheimer-Clark and J.M. Bucheimer. Located on opposite coasts. Anyway, a B-C marked "L.A. Calif" is from the company's 1960s era, from beginning of it to end. It was for the 1970s that B-C was marked "Valencia Calif" and at the end of that decade it was closed, with the name shifted to J.M.B.'s offices in Balts MD where both companies were bankrupted mid-1980s.

That being the case, one can't expect a 1975 catalogue to be a true representation of a holster exemplar from the '60s; so look to that earlier catalogue instead.

No, I'm not 'back', just my sense that the real elephant in the room was going to be overlooked.

Hello, Mr Nichols.
I can now fill with a 1970s example.

The 61-42 for sale on e-bay is stamped L.A. Calif, which I don't doubt dates it from the 1960's. The metal clip is for a 1.25" belt and sewn in with the rough side of the leather facing out.

The 1975 catalog shows these same characteristics but in the text states the clips for this model are 1.75"
So the catalog's description does not seem to match the illustration.

Here is a 61-11 with the 1970s Valencia stamping. It has a 1.75" clip and the leather holding the clip is smooth side out. So the clip matches the '75 catalog description.

Finally is the 61-11 purchased new in 1980. It looks essentially the same as the one above except for the newer logo. There is a faint 6 visible from the 61-11 stamp. So B-C apparently was still using the older number system. The only change in construction I see is the stitching.

J. M. Bucheimer Co (Frederick, Maryland)
An old line company dating to the turn of the century (that other one) as a holster company. Bucheimer ended in the late 1980's, acknowledging guesswork because of our lack of official records.

I can help you here. I used to live in Frederick, MD and went in the Bucheimer store a fair amount back in the day. I also used to deal with corporate records in my work. According to the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (MSDAT), the J. M. Bucheimer Co., Inc. forfeited its corporate charter on October 5, 1992 . By this Declaration through the MSDAT, the company ceased to exist as a corporation under the laws of Maryland. You can pull up the website for the MSDAT and look up this business under the Business Records section and print off a reference to the Proclamation if you want to have a paper record in your hand.

Both J.M. Bucheimer and Bucheimer-Clark made the Concealer by the end of the two companies' tenures 1983 or so. It was the latter that prefixed the number with 'C' for "concealer" and the former that used one of their scrambled numberings and the name 'Concealer'.

This is from B-C's 1980 catalog:

While this is a J.M.B. holster with the name marked on it, from the '70s:

By the end of the '70s the two companies were in disarray that went beyond the '78 death of the Tandy boss. And from then on one needs a roadmap, which I have, to unscramble it all.

According to the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation, the J. M. Bucheimer Co., Inc. formally incorporated in Maryland on June 24, 1983.

I have all that info; have a look at the USPTO's listing of the mark, which states that the DOFU (date of first use) of that name was 1942! Which I expect from the available data, is when the son who was J.M. Bucheimer changed the name from his father's that was Buchheimer spelled with two 'H's. J.M. Was not born until well after the claimed founding date of J.M.B.

An incorporation is simply one step along the path. That 1983 incorporation was related to Tandy Corp's decision to sell both J.M.B. and B-C, the latter of which was only Tandy's DBA (doing business as) in California; what with Tandy being a Texas Corp and so considered a 'foreign corp' to California. The company was sold in 1983, and operated by a chap named Nelson (yes, there were several Nelsons in holstory) who was bankrupted in 1989 and its assets ending up at Brauer.

Brauer did make a few examples of 'Bucheimer by Thompson' models for no apparent reason; perhaps to meet LEO purchase orders.

Hi everybody,

I'm back here again seeking your expertise...I thought I dowloaded all Bucheimer Charts / catalogues from this thread but I'm suddenly facing another puzzle: I can't find anything fitting in this thing here except my Colt Commander

Tii5LDE3_o.jpeg

which doesn't seem the intended gun anyway. The Holster is coded "NJR"

l71VOSLL_o.jpeg

(I know B stands for black)

I could not find this code in any of the Federal Man listings. Anyone can help me?

Is that the same one we looked at before?
I've got nothing on NJR.
My guess opinion is something made for the European market for a pistol not having a square profile at the back of the slide that would hold the strap.
HK P9 for example.

Unlisted Bucheimer Concealer

I have searched the interwebs, perused the master list and consulted with Red. I have a mystery. What pistol belongs in this holster.

My membership fee hasn't posted yet so no photos for the moment.

It is a C-3. Looks to be for a revolver. It is new, never used and I am trying to avoid marking up the interior by trying out different pistols.

Hope someone can help.
