Many moons ago a friend of mine and his buddy were deer hunting in East Texas. The buddy was hunting with a Winchester 94 in .30-30.
A pretty nice buck stepped out onto the trail. The hunter went to one knee and emptied the rifle by running the action. My friend asked him why he did not shoot? The guy said "I shot six times." My friend picked up the six loaded rounds from the dirt and handed them to him. Said "no, you did not shoot."

I've heard of that happening before. Hard to live down but good for laughs in later years.

Season before last I missed one of the biggest bucks I've ever seen. Shot was about 285 yards and I was shooting an accurate scoped .308 from a solid rest. I got a little flustered because there was a little 4 pt. right under my stand. I just knew I was going to spook him and he was going to spook Big Boy. If I'd of just stayed calm and waited for the big buck to come closer (he was feeding in my direction just as docile as a lamb), I could probably have killed both of them! I ended up cutting hair off his belly like you cut it with scissors. I had to laugh at myself. I did sell that .308 and bought a tack driving. 270 tho lolol

Not buck fever, but missed a chance at a nice one. Was with my son in a deer blind near Brady, Texas. He was about 8 or 9. He had to pee. The way the blind was constructed, we had to let the windows down to open the door so he could get down the ladder.
We made some racket. Deer started moving around. Still before dawn but you could see a little. Son says, "dad, there's a deer." I opened a window and rested it on my head. Saw a little deer and said "he's too small." Son said, "no, there" and pointed. Best deer I have ever seen. Nice wide spread, 12 or 14 points. He was moving by the time I saw him and did not have time for a shot. Later got a pretty nice 8 point from the same blind. About 250 yards. Think the big boy was not much over 100 yards if I had had time to shoot.

Former FIL, now deceased, told a story similar to OPs. The gun was a '94 Winchester .30-30 too. One of his hunting companions did basically the same thing as in OPs post except he shouted "bang" every time he levered a round but didn't pull the trigger. He was reportedly just a bit intoxicated at the time.:D:D:D

The lever gun with a push button safety have that happen a Cowboy Action shoots all the time. Those guys are allowed to reshoot that stage, ONCE!
