I was recently gifted a firearm from the widow of a buddy of mine. Her husband and I graduated from the LE academy together back in 1995 and he worked with me at the sheriff's office for several years before moving on to Little Rock Police Department. He passed away two years ago after a battle with cancer, and I was privileged to serve as a pall bearer at his funeral.
He and I shared an interest in firearms and I would often travel to Little Rock to go to local gun shows together. We even traveled to the Tulsa gun show a few times. We also shared an interest in USGI firearm and he had a modest collection. His wife said towards the end that he didn't want her having to deal with disposing of his collection so he sold off most of them himself, but a few he had tagged to go to specific individuals. On the tags he had written, "Please don't insult my memory by trying to pay my wife for this firearm."
The firearm I received is a Russian Izhmash Saiga-308-1 with a 22" heavy barrel chambered in .308 Winchester. In essence, it is a variant of the Kalashnikov AK-47. For several years I owned a Romanian SAR-1 AK-47 variant so I am familiar with the type. It came with a Russian made scope that I am not familiar with, and appears to have capable of an illuminated reticle although I have not installed a battery yet.
It does not appear to have been fired much, if at all, but I had some Remington 165 grain ammo on hand so I took it to the department range and tried it out. After a few familiarization rounds I discovered it was spot on at 150 yards. I found it surprisingly ergonomic and comfortable to shoot, although I was not used to the scope's soft rubber eyepiece right up against my eye socket.
Again, not being familiar with this firearm I did some internet searching to find an estimated value and was quite surprised to see them in the $2K price range.
Not sure what I'm going to use a high capacity .308 rifle for. I don't own any other .308 caliber rifles, and I am more of a big woods short range one-shot-drop deer hunter. I may have to re-evaluate my options and look for a longer range hunting opportunity.
