For those of you with a bucket list, you should add visiting Alaska if that isn't already on the list. I just returned from my third trip, and wouldn't mind going back again. This trip was a cruise and land excursion lasting 11 days. During that time, we saw Vancouver, BC, Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Talkeetna, Denali, Fairbanks and the Arctic Circle. Driving to and through Alaska is great - my wife and I did it back in 2007, but is time consuming and just not possible for someone without a lot of time available. Since my son's family and his mother-in-law were also on the trip, we chose the cruise instead. Below are just a few of the many sights we saw:

Typical coast line view:

A gold mine in Juneau. When in operation, it typically took 16 tons of ore to yield one ounce of gold!

Mendenhall Glacier:

For comparison, here is a scan of a film shot I took in 1999 to show how much the glacier has shrunk between then and now:

Run off falls from the glacier:

Glacier National Park:

One of the many glaciers located in College Glacier Park. IIRC, this was the Yale Glacier:

This photo was taken at 1:30 am in the Arctic Circle to show how light it was, even though we were well past the longest day of their year:

As stated, we took a land and sea excursion. It was on Princess cruise and we experienced both good and bad things. The good: the staff were excellent - friendly and for the most part, helpful. The food was plentiful and good. Shipboard activities were numerous and fun, and there were plenty of on shore excursions offered. Sailing was very calm, and getting on/off the ship went very smoothly. The price was reasonable, all things considered. Baggage handling was good but somewhat confusing at times.

The not so good? Princess offers a package that includes drinks and WiFi. Drinks include soda and mixed drinks up to $15 in value (IIRC) which unless you are ordering some pricey whiskey/wine, will cover nearly all your needs. The WiFi however sucked, plain and simple. Neither me nor my son's family are technologically impaired, but we couldn't get the WiFi to work most of the time, and internet was even worse. Although I always try to perform my mod duties when traveling, it proved impossible from the ship. Other issues included the ship being long in the tooth and in need of some care. And while food was plentiful and good, I've seen better selection/variety offered on other cruises, including other Princess ships.

All in all, a great time was had by all and if you have yet to see Alaska's immense and fantastic landscape, you really should add it to your bucket list, even if you don't have said list!

I'm going to show my wife your nice pictures and suggest we visit beautiful Alaska. She loves going places and will take me up on it in a heartbeat. You just cost me several thousand dollars. Thank you..........

We went to Alyeska winter before last and we had a great time. Did some skiing and took a helicopter ride and landed on a glacier and also took a snowmobile trip and walked inside another glacier. It was like the Rocky Mountains on steroids and loved the trip but am not in a big hurry to go back.

I have approx. 10-15 books on Alaska. Most of them printed in the 50s-60s. I inherited them. They were my uncles. He had wanted to go there ever since he had gotten back from Europe after WWII. Cancer took him at 72, having never set foot in Alaska. If it's something you really want to do, do it now. There may not be time later.

Would I be barred from the Forum or perhaps tar’d and feathered if I said my son lived in Anchorage for almost 4 yrs yet I was never there? The good news is he now lives in TN but is shopping for land outside Anchorage. So I’ll eventually get there.

Alaska is a great place to visit. Went back in the late 90's. Went to Homer and caught 4 75lb Halibut and 2 65lb Ling Cod. We saw Dall Sheep, Moose, killer whales, Grey whales breaching, Puffins by the hundreds.

It was a great trip and a place everyone should experience if they get the chance.

We did not see a Grizzly though which is something I had hoped to see. We had the opportunity to fly over to Katmai to see the bears at Brooks falls, but I passed because it was pricey. I could kick myself now.

I may make it back one day.

After living in the interior of Alaska for 3-1/2 years, it always amuses me when people visit the banana belt of AK in the (however brief) summer and call it a wonderland. They won't say that in January at -40.

My uncle was in the navy stationed on Adak Island many, many years ago with his wife and kids.

My cousin said they would have storms for days on end. For him as a kid growing up it was the ultimate adventure. He fished and hunted to his hearts content. He had a Lab, a 12 gauge, a fishing rod and a knife and would just take off for hours exploring.

He said there were areas that had unexploded munitions from WW2, and he didn't realize how dangerous it was until he was an adult.

Yup! Alaska is definitely on my list!! Wanted to go this year but it didn't work out. I think I need to book it for next Summer. Also want to take the 3 day Rail Trip to the Ship abord the luxury train through the Rockies.
