Bud's Now Has 4" Model 10s

Howard;
I'm speechless ! Your post implies that all pre-IL Smith & Wesson revolvers are now illegal in Kalifornia ! Say it ain't so !

Larry

They aren't illegal to own, just to import into California. You can still buy them from a private party within California. You just can't order one from out of state or ship them within state. It's not the lock that makes it so, it's the California safe gun roster. The manufacturer must submit a gun for testing and then pay a fee every year to keep the gun on the roster. Guns that are out of production usually fall off the list. They are listed by model so a 10-1 is different than a 10-2 even if the guns otherwise appear the same.

I think once the gun achieves C&R status the rules are different. Of course California has it's own rules for C&R also (I think).

To follow up, here are some pics of the gun I got from Bud's:

As you can see it's not perfect but it's a tight gun and I'm happy with it. The last 4 photos are with flash and bleached out a little. You can see some tape residue around the grip area - those are already cleaned off) and there are a few places lightly worn in the finish but it's basically a sound piece in my opinion.

The s/n is "CCS96xx" - anyone able to ID that or lead me to a s/n list so I can give it a birthday? Left side: the "Smith & Wesson" on the bbl and the insignia under the cylinder release - Right side: ou can see a sticker on the frame in front of the hammer that looks like a tiny bar code with "VPA00123" on it - other than that, ".38 Smith & Wesson Special Ctg" on the bbl and
"Made in U.S.A
Marcus Registradas
Smith & Wesson
Springfield, Mass."
just above and in front of the trigger guard.

One thing that'll have to be fixed - with the hammer cocked trigger is a true "hair trigger." I'll be shooting it double action anyway but I'm going to fix that or have it done.

That's my report - I have to admit I was expecting something in really bad shape and I was pleasantly surprised.

...and while I'm at it, I'll bet some of you experienced guys can point me to instructions for a trigger job on this model 10. I've done a lot of upgrades/modifications to my 1911's but never on a revo. I have time to do it, and I'll bet I can, if I can get some instructions.

I just placed my order for a square butt 10 from Bud's. It will be the 4th. gun that I have purchased from them. ( not Smiths) Sorry guys! Anyway, the 1 used gun that I bought was super clean as described. Have nothing bad to say about them. I'll put my C.T. laser grips on this. It will be a good companion to my 1905 4th. Change, and my 67 no dash. I hope that mine looks as good as jblackfish's. Bob

One more thing that I would like to add! I go to gun shops, and gun shows locally. I never see good Model 10's for $300.00. If you live in an area that has them, I envy you! Bob

Me too! Be sure and post back when you get it to let us know. As far as I know MOST of the people who have dealt with Bud's have been happy with the results. This is not my 1st buy from Bud's either but it's my first one of the "police trade-in" guns.

Pretty sure we can't have these shipped into Massachusetts.

Dammit

I'm a MA resident, and one of the fellows that works as a clerk in my favorite gun shop tells me that if it's made in MA, it doesn't need to be on the list. Whether or not this is always 100% true I can't say at this very moment, but I legally had a 629-2 transferred from another state to me recently, and that particular dash number isn't on 'the list,' but it all worked out totally approved. He mentioned that Dan Wessons aren't on the list, but can be transferred back into MA.

I really like the lines and shape of the model 10, and the way the extractor rod is 'on its own' under the barrel there. aaaaaaaaaaaand now I'm looking around the house to see what I can part with that might get me $300 D'oh!

Well, My round butt 10-10 came in today -- sorry no pictures -- It has a lot of blue wear but shows no sign of abuse -- Tight as a drum -- It should be a great shooter:D

I went and looked at this out of curiousity. Great deals for sure if you live in an area with few 'very few' gun shops.

I must have overlooked it, but what is Bud's shipping fee for these?

Shipping is included in the price. If you pay by credit card, they charge 3% of total.

Compulsive buying?

I missed out on the model 10 3 inchers Bud had but made up for it by buying two of the four inch, a round and a square. I have wanted a model 10 for some time but the market is small in this area and I was impatient. In addition daddy thought his oldest daughter needed something to keep the wolves from the door, and finally a round butt on a 4 inch heavy barrel intrigued me. Not sure if that is unusual but I can't recall seeing one. I was expecting them to be on the rough side cosmetically and I wasn't disappointed. Neither is as nice as the one pictured above. The square is the worse of the two with substantial pitting on the outside of the barrel, most of the blue gone, and almost no finish on the stocks. The rb is much better. Both are very tight with good triggers. I'll get them to the range in the next couple of days. I got what I expected so have no regrets. The sq will serve my daughter well until she decides what gun is right for her. The round has one issue that concerns me. The cylinder when opened and turned rubs the cylinder stop. What might be the cause? Is there an easy fix. Is it serious enough to contact Bud's? This is my first experience with them.

I picked mine up from my dealer this morning. it is a 10-10. after a cleaning and a BK adapter I am pleased with it. nice and tight, not to much wear, hasn't been fired much by the looks of it.I am going to the range this afternoon and will report back.

If mine arrives looking as nice I will be very happy. Haven't received any tracking info yet. Probably by mid week.

pretty is as pretty does. Went to the range with my two Buds. Both are Bud ugly. Shot off sand bags from approximately 33 feet. That's about as good as I can shoot. First model 10s I have shot. They are fun! Plan to do a stock refinish and give one or the other to my daughter to adorn her nightstand. I am going to shoot the snot out of the other.

Yes all the South Australian revolvers have now bee returned to the US (that are all M66s) I believe the Victorian transition is still ongoing so not all of the M10s may have left yet.

I would speculate that the "VPA" on the matrix stickers you are seeing on some of your revolvers *could* stand for "Victoria Police Armoury". The Armoury is the central location for the state that issues and maintains firearms and other implements of restraint. They also store spare/excess weapons. Those Martix stickers allow the item to be scanned and where is it being sent to be updated electronically for the service's records. This process would not be maintained at station level, that is a Sgt's role to undertake inspection of appointments on issue to a member.

I posted that in the 3inch thread...just saves me typing it here .. :)

I shot mine at the range after a match this past Saturday. It shoots really nice, hits where it's pointed and is so impressive I'm considering trying it in SSR, something that I never thought I'd consider. As for condition, it's got a couple of tiny dings and very little wear - the more I think about it the more pleased I am with the buy.

No one replied to my question (back in post #32) of identity on the Model 10 I bought. I've searched through the most comprehensive s/n list I could find on the internet without finding anything. Can anyone tell me anything about a M-10 s/n that begins with CCS? - Its format is CCSnnnn where nnnn is four numbers. Any help?

Been trying to help you out but I only have the older guide book. What dash number is your 10 ? 10-XX ?? My newest Smith is 1981 vintage and yours is the first flat hammer 10 I have ever seen.....I know....don't get out much....gonna keep looking....

Well 10-11 started in 1997.....CEVXXXX looks like 2004 vintage so CCSXXXX must be earlier (I think).....post your question in the 1980 to present and one of the members with a current up to date book will have your answer.....as a note 10-11 was standard barrel and 10-12 was bull barrel both dated to 1997....hope this helps a little....

Thanks a million, Rick. It helps a lot. I had no idea it was that recent.
Although I thought the flat hammer was more recent, I didn't know enough to put a date on it. I'll post in 1980 to present tomorrow when I get back to p-c.
