Was out shooting yesterday and and the entire end-plate came off of my A2 stock. The end cap on the buffer tube had completely stripped out the threading on the tube. I have been shooting some pretty 'hot' loads, but really think it was more related to a poor quality tube (UTG). I do remember noticing when I put it on that the threaded area had a slight bulge in it and had to really grease it up to get the stock over it. I have ordered an Armalite buffer tube which I hope will be of better quality. Was wondering if anyone has tried the JP tuned and polished extra power buffer spring and if so is it worth the extra $?

Imagine what would have happened had you been in a position where you had to use that weapon for family/home/self defense at the time. Probably would have ended up costing you a lot more.

Why are you even bothering to change from the factory buffer/spring and tube in the first place?

This is a hunting rifle not a home defense weapon. I have modified it with that alone in mind. I have a few others that have been modified for home/self defense. That being said, I'm glad it happened yesterday instead of on my prarie dog hunting trip in 2 weeks! I always take 3 rifles for situations like that, but I woulda been real disappointed to not get to shoot with the sport.
I changed it because most of my shooting is between 300 and 400yds. The collapsable stock was not conducive to shooting at that distance, for me. I changed over to the A2 stock and it has really helped improve my accuracy which I really like...alot. The tube/buffer/spring had to go to accomadate the rifle stock which is longer than the collapsable carbine stock.
I'm interested if the JP heavy duty spring helps with recoil/muzzle rise. I have a brake on that has helped tremendously but if I can get just a little more out of it I'll be seeing 'pink mist' in my scope.
Now that I think about what's $10.00 for an AR mod anyway?

Foxtrot you still seem all hung up on needing these rifles for home/self defense. Quite a few of us use these for other purposes.
UTG is American made and is supposed to be of some quality, that does appear that you might be overpowering your buffer spring or maybe even have worn it out already. From what I have seen in the past that can and does happen to every brand occasionally especially with hot loads. You might want to consider an adjustable gas valve, it will let you continue to shoot loads however you want but can turn the valve down to reduce wear and tear on the recoil assembly. glad you werent hurt.;)

I do have and like the UTG products. Didn't mean to say that all their stuff is poor quality, just this particular buffer tube was bulged at the threads and I remember noticing it when I put the stock on. In hindsight, I shoulda done something about it then. One of my hunting buddies liked the UTG A2 stock so much he got one too. We were shooting together yesterday and it worried him enough to pull the stock off and check his and it looked like new. Anyway, I ordered the Armalite buffer tube and the JP tuned/polished heavy duty rifle spring. I really don't think it was the loads that did it cause he's shooting the same ones as well. I'm gonna put it to the bulged tube and chalk it up to experience gained.

BTW, built a new 'prarie dog' to shoot at it's 2-1/2" wide, 10"tall and 7/8" thick, simulates standing and on all 4's.

Oh, i'm aware of that. Not hung up on it, just seen to many cases of people having weapons that wern't reliable and the consequences from that.

Storeyteller, I bought two of the AR500 8" gongs from that place in Arkansas. It says to not shoot high powered rifles at less than 75 yards and I can understand that. We were shooting the muzzle loaders at them at 20 yards the other day sighting in. They made big splat marks but no indentations. Moved them out to 50 same thing. Moved them out to 100. I love to hear them ring, they ring louder than the shot. Muzzle Loader season ends Sept 30 here, I will then be blasting them with some of the loads I have been building and working up for all of my centerfire rifles...plus those 75Amax's I loaded up. Love the PDog target, what range are you shooting it at?

300yds with the sport. 400 with the .243 and out to 500 with the .260. Doesn't "gong" but does "thwack".
I bet those muzzzleloaders are fun!

Regarding UTG, I believe it's only UTG Pro that is made in the Michigan manufacturing facility.

According to the Leapers (UTG) web page these are the UTG products made in the US > UTG Products Made In the USA < only 24 products US made according to their web page. There is not a A2 Butt stock kit or buffer tube shown among their U.S. made products. Although it shows 24 products, its not actually 24 fully made in the U.S., two are actually only assembled in the U.S but it says some of the assembly parts are U.S. made.

The only A2 butt stock assembly they show on their web pages (supposedly for real gun parts) is the Model 15 Standard A2 Butt Stock Assembly - Black > its not Mil spec'd, commercial spec'd, or any other spec, and is not (according to their web pages), as someone wanted to point out in reference to UTG products, U.S. made. They don't sell a separate A2 stock buffer tube, they do sell the 6 position extension tubes for a collapsable stock. I can only infer from their web page of US made products, and looking at the description for the A2 butt stock kit no where does it say U.S made like the other U.S made products, that the A2 butt stock kit is not US made so its not correct that UTG products are U.S. made but rather that only 24 items of their entire product line is U.S. made or assembled in the US. with some U.S. made parts.

Detail Information:
• New Gen Model 15 Standard A2 Butt Stock Assembly
• Stock Molded from Impact Resistant Advanced Polymer
• Complete with A2 Extension Tube, Recoil Spring, Buffer Assembly, Stock Spacer and Screw
• Storage Pocket for Cleaning Kit, Small Parts, and Other Accessories

Specification:
Material: Aluminum/Plastic
Height: 10.6"
Weight: 25.0 oz
Color: Black

They don't even say the tube is made from a weapons grade or aircraft grade aluminum which is the standard as a minimum with some parts. Its a cheaply made foreign import knockoff made from inferior materials, thats the reason the price is so low. Might be suited to the airsoft crowd but it does not belong on real weapons. Unknown manufacturing origin, unknown manufacturing quality standards, unknown specification standard, unknown reliability, unknown testing or proofing standards, unknown materials standards, unknown quality control standards, unknown reliability or durability indications.

Its cheap though and some anonymous person somewhere on the internet said it worked for them, so that must mean its a good thing .... right? :)

Being made in the U.S. or not is not a factor, there are plenty of weapons parts not U.S. made that are good quality weapons parts but this is something else. I find references on the 'net to this product failing on others too. If UTG had any sense of responsibility they would pull this product and do a product recall at a minimum.

I did get it cause it was cheap and it ended up costing me. I agree with foxtrot that it could have ended up costing me LOTS more in the wrong situation. I'll chalk it up to experience gained and try not to make the same mistake again.
Got the ArmaLite tube and JP spring today and man am I glad. Been getting flat outshot trying to use that callapsable stock! This tube is way beefier than the other one and has no observable defects. I'll get it on tonight...and tomorrow...I'm back in the saddle again!!
