Bug Out Facts, Fables and Fairy Tales.

Walnutred,

I hired a guy to get him and family out of there. His dad would not leave, but got the rest of the family out, working, and eventually they made enough between them to buy into a program Canada offered for immigration.

There are some stories there.
One thing I learned from him was that the idea of having something to trade was only evidence that you likely had something for them to come back and steal more of later.
Using .22 to buy gas? Not a good move. Stocking things that need refrigeration? not a good idea.

What will they hit first? Easy but high damage targets. The power grid, water supplies. Knock out the grid for 60-90 days? Expects say it would not be difficult. Think of that for "disaster", even if there is still a government and police force of sorts.

Where I live isn't exactly out in the boonies but, it's definitely off the beaten path. That being said, if the fecal matter ever really does hit the rotary device, I'm heading straight out to the compound. I can't say much more than it's owned by a friend, is well armed, well stocked and 100% self sufficient.

I too live out in the bush, about 10 miles from a little burg that has lots of meth-heads, pill-heads, and smack addicts.

Once everything's used up in town, they'll take to the lesser populated RFD. On one level, it's bad because if they get in somewhere, they're not leaving and can do whatever to the original occupants with impunity.

On another, hopefully they'll be debilitated enough from withdrawal symptoms that putting them in their place if they're actin' up will be easier.

Most godawful part is that unless you personally know who's approaching, the only truly safe move is to present arms. I agree with "ask and we'll give what we can, under heavy guard. Try to just take it and it's mess-making time".

When I finished reading "Lucifer's Hammer", I had the screaming urge to assemble every primer, case, powder, and bullet in my possession.

Having what you need is one thing. Keeping it is another altogether.

This thread has given me much food for thought:

Our community is a rural city (about 25K surrounded by farms and ranches and National Forest.) Major river through town, as well as a minor river and several creeks. Many "urban" deer come into town and salmon in the rivers.

I am 64+, overweight, and diabetic. we have a 1/4 acre garden and can many of our veggies. We have three refrigerators/freezers (BIG ice chests if power goes out) and reasonable camping supplies and canned goods.

I've lived a good life and my family (except the misses) is too far away to give or get aid. I expect we would get an influx of westsiders from the "big" cities.

I think I'd sit back, fortify ourselves and wait as long as we can. We have enough weapons to make it costly and wouldn't go down easily (we'd go down but not without a fight)

In the post-apocalyptic world that everyone likes to go on about, I'm not so sure I would want to live that long in it anyway.

I did see a funny bumper sticker the other day. :D

I've heard people talk about the meth heads, thieves, murderers, rapists and such roaming to the out lands after they have raped, murdered, thieved and drugged their way out of the cities. Personally, I don't believe it to be the case. In a true TEOTWAWKI situation, they would be the first to go. Let's face it, they only exist because we let them.

We, as a society, protect the criminal element. Just about everyone knows where the druggies are, who the murderers and thieves are and where they hide. In the event of a total social breakdown, are the majority of us going to say "We know those two meatheads down on the corner beat up old people for their social security checks, but maybe now they'll straighten up." Right. They are there right now only because civilization protects them with laws that would punish those that would stop them.

Once those laws no longer exist..........

Absolutely. Small communities would begin to take hold, roughly under a 150 people. The human mind has evolved to exist among a 'tribe' of approximately that many people. It's how many interpersonal relationships our brain can deal with and keep track of. It is also, not accidentally, the size of an infantry company.

These groups will be very wary of outsiders, human threats will not last long within the groups, being either eliminated or cast out, and long term survival outside of a group will be incredibly difficult or impossible.

At least, that's how humans have existed for 99.9% of our time on earth. Probably what we would revert to if it really is TEOTWAWKI.

Hunker down

I live in a rural area. One hour from a million residents of a crime infested city. Four hours from Texas/Mexico border with illegal Mexicans and OTM (Other Than Mexicans) coming across illegally at the rate of 100's per day. When the balloon goes up I guess I will be forced to hunker down. Too old to run. I could leave out a horseback with my wife and family but a person on a horse is easy pickings and a big target. Beside I probably couldn't get out if I wanted too. I don't think my F250 4x4 will be able to make it over the pile of empty hot brass between by house and the cattle guard.

There are so many reasons to cause people to bug out. Political unrest, plague, nuclear war, financial depression and the list could go on. First off is if you don't have a place to go to. Where are you going?. How much food, water, medicines and other stuff can you stick in a car or truck?. Having seen the huge traffic snarls in NYC during a bad storm or heavy snow that a 30 minute drive would take three hours
to do, and evacuating from New Orleans to wherever and end up sitting on the highway. And just about every disaster movie shows the snarled traffic. Then you have the "I'll take what I want bunch" Sooner or later they will get theirs. Starving families will do unconsionable things to keep their family alive. I'm old, fat, and not in the best shape physically. I'll do my best to keep me and mine safe. Frank
