Opinions are opinions, and you like what you like. But here are the facts:
The marketing story behind Bulleitt is BS, but the quality of the whiskey is first-rate. Diageo, the British owner of the brand, just opened a Bulleit distillery in Shelby County, KY, in 2016. Up to 2014, it was contract-distilled by Four Roses at Lawrenceburg, although not one of their recipes. So you know it’s good quality. Since Bulleit is about 7 years old, that’s still what’s in the bottles today.
Their rye is bought from MGP in Indiana and is good too, but you’re better off buying George Dickel Rye which is the same MGP stuff about 6 to 8 bucks cheaper.
Bulleit is a high rye recipe bourbon, so it has about 28% rye in the mash rather than the usual 15%, like Knob Creek, or no rye at all like Maker’s. That makes it spicier and is a matter of personal preference. You need to just try it. But Bulleit is definitely worth the money.
