Bulleit Bourbon? Opinions

Bulleit is my go-to bourbon when funds are tight. Best bourbon out there for well under $30. I sometimes catch it on sale here for $23....I stock up then if I have the extra cash. You'll be hard pressed to find anything better at that price. Even when I'm not scratching pennies together, I will grab some Bulleit over Maker's or Knob Creek.

It's fine, but I've never appreciated it as particularly good. I've bought a few bottles over the years, but I prefer Knob Creek.

Like anything aesthetic, this is a completely subjective take: you'll need to try it to see how you like it.

I drink the rye, too. Got a couple bottles for Christmas (along with a bottle of Breckiridge “Front Range” rye from Colorado). The rye is good enough, but to some extent, as with American lagers, I feel like I am really drinking the label, and in the case of Bulleit, the cool bottle.

The bourbon is good enough, too, but Jim Beam usually suits me fine. If I want to save some money, the Old Crow label strongly resembles the Beam label.

Opinions are opinions, and you like what you like. But here are the facts:

The marketing story behind Bulleitt is BS, but the quality of the whiskey is first-rate. Diageo, the British owner of the brand, just opened a Bulleit distillery in Shelby County, KY, in 2016. Up to 2014, it was contract-distilled by Four Roses at Lawrenceburg, although not one of their recipes. So you know it’s good quality. Since Bulleit is about 7 years old, that’s still what’s in the bottles today.

Their rye is bought from MGP in Indiana and is good too, but you’re better off buying George Dickel Rye which is the same MGP stuff about 6 to 8 bucks cheaper.

Bulleit is a high rye recipe bourbon, so it has about 28% rye in the mash rather than the usual 15%, like Knob Creek, or no rye at all like Maker’s. That makes it spicier and is a matter of personal preference. You need to just try it. But Bulleit is definitely worth the money.

Bulleit is OK but not my favorite by a long shot! Woodford's Reserve is far better IMO at about the same price range. If you want a very inexpensive Bourbon, try Larceny which runs about $23 bucks a bottle. Despite the cheap price, Larceny is excellent.

That said, it is very much a personal choice. If you left a $500 bottle of Scotch at my house it would be safe 10 years later - - I can not stand the taste of Scotch no matter the price, brand or age. I've tried to like it but have finally decided it's just not for me. Again, personal taste.

Thank you all for the imput. I think it deserves a try.

Also thanks for the suggestions. If by chance they appear for sale around here they may be considered.

It is OK, but I prefer Woodford Reserve or Willett. Buffalo Trace, if you can find it is a good $ vs. quality match.

I love a good aged rye, but the Bulleit Rye, for me, is awful. I gave away the bottle I opened, and will not be revisiting that one.

Anyone need to clear out those $500 bottles of scotch, send them to me ;)
