Bullseye Container

1960_canister_reddot.gif

According to Alliant Alliant Powder - About Us the can pictured is from 1960.

The rest of the cans used after that are at the bottom of the link above.

This Unique can is the can prior to the Red Dot can in this picture. The labeling will date a can more than the style of can does.

Yes, I shoot both of them without a problem.
good info, thanks

Since I know for a fact Alliant has some perfectly good 1898 vintage Unique on the shelf, not in a special storage area, I'm not afraid of using older powder. Of course, it has to smell right (no acrid smell of nitric acid formation) in order for me to use it. However, I've only had one can of WWII H4831 go bad on me (I have some WWII H414 that's still good).

There are several reloaders in the family and some of them don't have enough sense to get a decent supply of components, even though they shoot a lot. So, I guess getting components is my job. :(

I have and use primers made in the 1960s all the way to new production.

I suppose the old saying, "waste not, want not" needs to be considered a little more seriously by the reloading populace.

Paul,

I believe H-414 was a "new" powder when introduced in the mid-'60s. Heralded as THE powder in the '06, I shot a lot of it in my main hunting rifle, a'58 M-70, for several years.

Good shooting.

You're right Homie, I went out and checked the can and it doesn't say it's WWII on it like the 4831 does. Would you buy HiVel #2 or DuPont #6 instead?
