Buttstock Recoil Spring Sound

Hey All,
Just wondering, how long did it take you to get used to the recoil spring sound in the adjustable butt stock? I don't remember hearing any spring noise from the M16A1, which of course had a non-adjustable stock. It's not bad, it just surprised me I guess. First time firing an AR since the service, which has been a long time. It's a M&P15 ll. Nice rifle all in all.

It is frequently from a spring with a rough surface dragging in the tube as it compresses and expands. There are some springs in the $20 range with a ground surface, and a dry surface coating them.

Also, try some grease of your choosing. Mine currently just has white lithium grease. PTFE loaded grease might be even better.

It may not be the spring itself making the noise you hear. Remove the spring and buffer and shake the buffer to see if it rattles. The buffers are filled with different types of materials that act as a inertia buffer. Cheaper ones have balls inside that will rattle, more expensive ones have tungsten powder that is silent.

I had the same problem. I found that when I rotated the selector switch to AUTO and fired I could no longer hear the offending buffer tube noise. Problem solved.

I dislike the sound of the buffer spring reciprocating/bolt slamming into battery as it's transmitted through the butt stock/buffer tube assembly when fired in semi auto - very annoying. Can't hear it when fired in full auto.

I haven't heard an AR15 spring rattle in a couple of decades.

It's probably not a coincidence that I've had severe tinnitus about that long.

I too have noticed and been a bit put off by the noise of the stock spring..

to the point of ditching my hearing protection the other day, as the sound of the riffle going BOOM, was more pleasant to me, then that darn spring.. LOL

I brushed mine with the same wheel bearing grease I use on the bolt carrier. Quiet as can be, and it lasts a thousand rounds.

I know you won't do it, at least right now, but JP Silent Captured Spring.
Eliminates the noise and makes the rifle run like butter. Literally makes the rifle feel like a whole different rifle.

For over twice the cost of the previous parts to get rid of the sprong, it better make the rifle feel like a whole new gun and then some!

It's not a big deal, I was just not expecting it. I do believe it is due to the hearing protection. Did not think about that. I can live with it. Though I will check out other suggestions made here. Thanks all!

Only my fancy spring only cost $6 and it does help. I agree though, I'm not paying $65 for a spring.

I never noticed the recoil spring making a sound. I guess I need to get my hearing checked - again.

Put a piece of open foam rubber inside the spring. This will dampen the noise.

I was surprised the first, and, maybe second, time I fired an AR. Then, when I was shooting NRA High Power Competitions, I found that the RRA NM gun I'd purchased had a buffer that wasn't properly secured with a roll pin. It was there, just not properly secured. After my best ever effort at the lower yardages, two X's and a 10 at 600yds, it locked up the rifle. What the buffer sounded like at that point, was as irrelevant as could be. RRA's lack of response to my calls, e-mails, and letters after the fact, was totally relevant. Lessons learned. I haven't even heard a "sprong" since. (And, that represents many thousands of rounds through various AR platform rifles since). That's just noise. Kinda like the strange sounds emanating from Glock pistols. What does the target say? THAT I'll listen to.

Good choice. I have them in all my ARs, including my rifle length and they are very inexpensive.
