I've often read that the bound books of C&R (03FFL) holders are rarely audited. Maybe so, but 01 FFL dealer are. An out of state dealer who shipped me a Smith on my C&R license was going through an audit when it was noted that their bound book entries for the sale to me were not complete. This sale was more than 2 years ago. Fortunately, the dealer had kept my email address and I was able to provide the date in my bound book and well as a copy of my current license.

Just something to remember if you have a C&R license and use it.

Keep your book current. I try and make sure the very first day I bring one home the book gets updated. I don't buy all that many, and still using the same book on my 3rd C&R renewal. What I have a hard time remembering to do is to document the sale of a C&R qualifying gun that I had prior to obtaining a C&R. It's my understanding those transactions must be documented also.

There’s been much discussion on the last part of your post concerning recording of prior owned C&Rfirearms. The regs are a little confusing and ambiguous at best. Some record the transfers to be on the safe side. I’ve spoken to a ATF agent who told me it wasn’t required for prior owned C&R qualifying firearms. Best is to read the regs and decide for yourself.

All the years I’ve had a C&R I’ve never heard a thing out of them. Use to get mailings and publications from them but even those have stopped?
I keep the license up to date just to have it but I haven’t used it in years!

The unfortunate thing is if you ask two or three different ATF agents the same question, you will get two or three different answers. Back when I first obtained my license I had called the ATF HQ and asked for an application and was directed to my local state office. Called then and they sent out the application form which I submitted. They immediately cashed my check, but a couple weeks later they sent it back as it was on an outdated form and not acceptable. At least they sent the current blank form.

I got a CD several years ago with the current regs and listing of listed C&R eligible. May have been 7 or 8 years ago. I'm not sure if have heard anything since then.
