Cabelas pricing models

Stopped by my local Cabelas yesterday to renew my NRA membership during their special offer and guess what I found in their gun library?

A 686+ 3" with stock rubber grips for $619 and an identical 686+ 3" with wood stocks for $799. Both identical condition about 95% condition with case and papers. Add to that, their 10% off coupon for used guns and a $20 coupon I had, guess which one I walked out with? $550. OTD. Sometimes their crazy pricing policy does work out for us.

Can't wait to get to the range.

I wouldn't doubt it. There's not a cabelas locally but do have bass pro and gander mtn. GM has used guns in their showcase and I occasionally stop by to check. I've yet to find a deal so still awaiting that first firearm purchase from them but did buy some on-sale .22 ammo once.
I have seen some high/over priced handguns there as well as totally mistaken description of what the gun was. I once asked who and how the price/description was determined. They said their firearms experts did that.

They go strictly blue book. The key ingredient is what they view the 'condition' at.
I trade with them fairly regularly and I try to go in on certain days hoping to catch one person in particular in the library cause he never low balls me.

But the profit margin on used guns is huge and why most places like buying them cause most are not beaters they are people like me selling to fiance another gun. And have only had them a short time and they are like new with few rounds through them.

I enjoy the hassle free transaction.
And I'd rather deal with them than a pawn shop who will most assuredly try to bend you over. And you usually need to take another shower when you get home from some of those seedy dumps.

My local Cabela's has got a collection of guns in their library that would make the Smithsonian Institute envious. I'm taking some guns for sale that date back to Daniel Boone.

That they do. Some of the lever actions there are just jaw dropping. I look at them and wonder what they have seen for about 20 minutes each time I go.

You do occasionally find a good deal at Cabela's. But, not too frequently. GM has a much higher mark up on used guns, but, after a period will mark down and sometimes there might be a deal.

What kind of wood stocks were on the gun? Some wood stocks can make the price vary greatly!

A friend of mine who used to work in the Gun Library at the local store said used gun prices were controlled, at least in part, by what they'd paid for the gun. If their buyer paid too much, they just marked it up the usual percentage and let customers talk about how expensive their guns were.

Our local Cabela's Gun Library says used guns bought by corporate are sold at a price set by corporate. Pricing on local store buys and trades are set by the store, hence the sometimes odd price differences.

I bought a used Franchi Alcione with 12 & 20 gauge barrels for my wife at Cabela's gun library recently for $1,700.00. Plus 8% tax.
The stock was a little worn. They used a book value for a gun in excellent condition, and then told me that the stock could be reconditioned easily if I wanted to clean it up.
My wife shot it, put 100 shells through it, didn't love it. I called them a week later and the manager said he'd give me $1,100 or so, depending upon condition. I was bummed, needless to say, and doubt that I'll go back there. I expected to take a hit of 20% or so for a week's use, expensive rental. I cleaned it better than it was when I took it home. I've bought lots of everything there and will probably go to Bass Pro or somewhere else in the future, just on principal.
