Recently acquired a Chinese sks. Deer hunting in indiana requirements are a bullet diameter larger than .243. The 7.62x39 after some research is .308. So I am assuming that is larger than the requirements. May be a dumb question but calibers or some ammunition is confusing. Any input would help.

There are a lot of good references on the internet.
Just search for "caliber", "bullets sizes", etc.
Here's a start:

You are good to go. BYW, my hunting partner and I found that the 7.62x39 cartridge is excellent for Whitetail Deer. We went to the Texas Hill-country a couple of years ago and brought back 4 Whitetails each. I used my Ruger 77 bolt action and he used his SKS. IMHO, Whitetail Deer venison is MUCH tastier than Mule Deer venison. .......... Big Cholla

The 7.62X39 is not a legal rifle cartridge for Deer hunting in Indiana.
Rifle ctgs must have a bullet dia of .357 or larger. Case length must
be at least 1.16" and no more than 1.8", basically pistol cartridges
used in rifles. Each year Indiana publishes a Hunting and Trapping
Guide that is free and available at gun shops and any big box store
that carries ammo like Walmart. Deer season is over for 2014-2015
but other game is still in season and i'm sure you can find a copy.
It's a must read every year as it has the seasons and any changes
in regulations. It has all regulations regarding Deer hunting including
specifications for guns and bows allowed.
