I screwed up a 686-6 hammer. I need a new one, but no one has one in stock.
Brownells
Numrich
Midway...etc.

Can I buy Directly from S&W, or can I even have them repair it? (for a charge, of course) Voided warranty, I'm sure :(

Smith and Wesson does sell parts.

Some parts are listed as needing fitting, those are sometimes available to S&W Armorers and sometimes restricted to the factory.

Smith and Wesson will also do repairs. Just give them a call on Monday and they will take care of you.

E-bay always has them for a decent price. I picked up a few new ones to tinker with. Numbrich Arms.com has them also and they cost less than rom Smith & Wesson. If the Mothership is out these are two good alternatives. Also try Brownells.com

Call S&W customer service. I buy parts from them all the time. Especially springs that other retailers seem to double the price on. You would be surprised at the bits and pieces they keep in stock. Takes about 7-10 days to get your order on the whole.

My experience has been that S&W will sell certain parts to the public at certain times. I have purchased parts from them in the past that they say they can no longer sell directly and must be installed by them.

I would guess part of this has to do with liability and or the fact that they want you to send the gun in for them to service. It also find it sometimes depends on who you get on the phone.
