[ I not sure what section to put this question in so please forgive me / move question to correct forum.]

I have a model 19 with Target trigger and hammer. Is it possible to exchange these for the small, thin service type? If yes, will the factory do this or is it strickly a gunsmith proposition?
Thanks,
Bill

It certainly is and I don't think the operation is challenging IF the hammer and trigger have been fitted to one another and IF you have the proper screwdriver bits and rebound spring tool. I have several fitted sets of the hammer and trigger you desire and would gladly give a set to you in exchange for yours.

I am not a gunsmith professional and i have switched them out on my guns, isnt that hard. Go to youtube and look they have some good examples there. Good luck, those target hammers and triggers are desireable to some, might i ask why you want rid of them?

Exchange traget trigger & hammer for service ones

To AveragED & bigshep85,

I'm planning to modify a model 19 into a custom carry. I have a good friend retired as a S&W factory gunsmith who does many unique modifications for me (no he's not looking for work). I like to research the possibility of a custom job before i approach him. Too many times he's laughted his head off and ask me if I think he's God to do the modifications I want. So I guess I'll get to the point. I want him to modify a 19 4 inch to a 19 3 inch with rounded butt. It now has the big hammer and trigger which I don't like thus if the project goes thru I'll trade with you AveragED. He just showed me a picture of a Model 66 he did years ago and it was beautiful.

WP,

The mods you describe could be done by a competent amateur. Your friend, with his experience, should be able to do them in his sleep. He may laugh at you for asking him to do such a simple job, but I'm positive he won't tell you that it's impossible. It should be a very shootable yet concealable package. BTW, you might look into a partially bobbed hammer with just enough left on top to checker for slow, deliberate single action use but enough gone to "clear leather" quickly with nothing to drag when coming into action. Just a thought.

I don't care for the target triggers and hammers either. You should be able to purchase them at Numrich Gun Parts off their website. Easy work to do. Jerry Miculek's DVD "Trigger Job" shows how to do it. As far as the barrel goes why don't you see if you can purchase a 3" barrel off the web and either keep or sell your 4" version? There might even be some guys on this forum that would want to trade with you.

before you do or buy anything make sure that the serial number is in the right spot for conversion to round butt. Ocassionally the SN is too far forward for factory RB grips.

The problem with cutting the barrel is with having to mount a new front sight. Most avaliable K frame 3" barrels are for Model 13 fixed sight frames. 2.5" barrels for Model 19's are a better option.
