Can this Muzzle energy be true??

Its adds up in a muzzle energy calculator BUT, I see several different specification for this S&B load??? S&B is hot, but these are 9mm Luger ballistics,,, is this right, or seem right? The handloaders would know.....350 foot pounds? 7-A50018 - Ammo .38 Special Sellier & Bellot Lead Round Nose 158 Grain 997 fps 50 Round Box

With rounding, I get 348 ft-lbs.

That's hot .38 Special. It's either +P+ or fired in a non-vented pressure barrel.

The 357 isnt much longer than a 38, if you loaded them up with similar powders you will get similar but diminished performance from a 38, the weakness in a 38 is due to the gun its fired in, the case itself isn't the limiting factor.

It is considered a standard pressure, ALL Sellior And Bellot is HOT stuff, their 115 9mm pushes over 400 foot pounds, I just never seen a ..38 that hot and considered not +P, (Not noted anywhere on the box at all) and That is a damn good loading I think. Thier .32acp is over 170 foot pounds and their stuff is just hot. The Federals I have no move out at 770 (Slower than a Crosman 760 Airgun) and hits at 210 at the muzzle, regardless that is one hell of a wallop from such a slow moving round.

All S&B is not hot. It varies among different calibers. 32 acp
is indeed hot, higher velocity than any other factory ball i've
chronographed. 380 ball is warm, not hot in my experience.
9mm 115 gr ball is poor in at least three different lots i've
tried, barely breaks 1100 fps with poor accuracy. 25 acp ball
is slower than any other brand in my guns. I have some 38
spl 158 gr LRN std pressure that is hot, some individual
rounds going over 900 fps out of a 4" barrel.

That load would torque a J-Frame out of your hands!! WAY HOT LOAD.

Looks like the IDEAL defensive/combat load for a .38 Spl that in an actual shooting scenerio you will likely NOT reload....just five round maximum and probably not that.
Also, you are looking at "paper" numbers not actual chronograph speed. It may well be that S&B chrono tests their ammo from quite longish barrels which would produce a distorted impression. The published numbers tend to look very much like 6" barrel velocity.

I suspect those specifications were produced in an 8 inch non vented barrel. I've shot S&B ammunition and it's NOT any hotter than typical loads from Federal, Winchester, or Remington.

Buffalo Bores 158 gr plus P FBI cartridge gets 474 FPE out of a 4 inch S&W Mt. Gun barrel. Getting close to .357 Mag country!
