I have decided on the M&P .40 as my next Pistol but I am still up in the air on the full size version versus the compact. This gun will spend pretty much equal time at for cc and range time. I live in WA state so I usually have at least a sweatshirt on as a cover shirt I had the chance to handle a .40c with the x grip and was pretty impressed but I was hoping to get the full size to wear in a SERPA dropleg when im out on the range doing transitions. How hard would it be to conceal a fs frame as a 5/11 175 pound frame?

If you plan to carry it concealed, get a compact. It's that simple.
For a target gun, a FS might make more sense.

I'm 5'10" and weigh about 175lbs. Living on the coast I almost always have an overshirt at least (cordoury or plaid with lining) that hangs down about as far in back as the bottom of a rear pocket on a pair of jeans. I recently bought a Yaqui Slide holster ( Yaqui Slide ) for when I go out to the woods or the dunes to shoot. I was surprised at how well my 40fs conceals beneath it at the 4 o'clock position. On the other hand I'm sure that a compact would hide even better. By the way, that holster turned out to be a LOT more comfortable than I imagined. Also comfortable sitting and driving. I would say though that if you go with the full size you will definately have to dress for it if you want to CC.

I have both in 9, the FS is far and away better for shooting, so if you can CC it, the I would go with the big one. But if you NEED a CC gun, and don't plan on consistently shooting beyond thirty feet, the M&P40c might work.

Full size, then maybe the compact later. I have both, prefer the full size for shooting, but cc the compact.

I'm more in the favor of the compact, easier to conceal and easier for me to shoot. Much more comfortable in my hand even though I have big hands.

I carry a 40c and have a 9mm conversion barrel for more economical fun at the range, but have no trouble carrying my 45FS in an IWB holster. The 40c is more accurate than a lot of other full-size pistols I have shot, and is a breeze to carry in an IWB. Whatever feels best in your hand should be your first buy, but I'll bet you'll get both eventually!

I have the 40 in FS and compact. If my wife would have only let me have one( yep its true) The full size would be the one for me. It isnt much harder to conceal and I prefer a full size when carring in a owb holster. its a tad easier to shoot accurate and hold more rounds. But my wife loves me so I have both!

I have a full size and i have a few friends with the compact. I can pick up the compact and shoot it just as well at the full size. I really need to get a 40c for myself.

You will love the 40 compact not just for CC but also for versatility it can also be a compact 9mm or a 357 SIG compact using the same magazine and for the 9mm just buy a couple of 17 rounder mags plus the barrel and wow you now have three guns in one, problem 357 SIG ammunition is not cheap or easy to find even though I found 300 rounds at 357 SIG | SGAmmo.com and they ship fast!

Thanks Houdini!! I was interested in a full sized .40 for this purpose because I wasn't sure the compact shared this versatility. Now that I know the compact is swappable just as easily I now have a new contender for my next purchase. I think I"m going to get a .40c, purchase a 9mm barrel, and give my 9c to my wife.

This is simple get the compact and some full size mags and X-Grips from here XGRIP : Sub-Compact Handgun Magazine Adapters : Product List I love mine at the range as also in my carry double stack double pouch mag carrier!

This solves many problems and you can go to my post on this matter here for more reasons why a compact http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-m-p-pistols/238279-why-should-you-buy-compact-m-p.html is the way to go!

Although I have a full size, I still got an xgrip for my compact. I agree, everyone with a compact do yourselves a favor and get an xgrip with full size magazine.

I'm 5'9 170 and the .40c works well in summer t-shirt & shorts carry also.

Versatile M&P 40C

I went with a 40C specifically for CCW and could not be happier. It carries comfortable with what ever I am wearing. It barely even prints with those snug shirts I have. I don't really have to dress around it and I have good flexibility when moving around.

I realy like that it shoots more like a full size pistol, because it has great accuracy for a compact. I do recommend using the "pinky" extensions. I keep trying to adjust my grip without them on. I plan on adding a full size magazine, X-Grips and night sights. I already have picked up a rail light(Streamlight TLR-4). It can then double for nightstand duty.

I am one happy Smith and Wesson owner!

They just keep me coming back for more. I'll probably track down a nice M&P 15-22 next:D.

Couldn't have put it better myself. I also plan on doing exactly what you've listed with the FS mag, X-Grip and so on. With the ability to customize the 40c so much I don't know why someone would go with the FS, but that is just my $.02.
