It's no secret that my hometown of Baltimore has a crime problem (to put it mildly). Last year, in that city of about 570,000 people, there were 11,000 car thefts and about 1,000 armed carjackings.

Well, the other night a legally-armed citizen turned the tables on a would-be carjacker. The kid is in "grave condition", and while I take no pleasure in his impending demise, if this sort of thing happened more often there'd be a lot fewer carjackings...

It's too bad. A life wasted because of stupidity. You gotta wonder what these thieves/ car jackers are thinking

They aren't thinking...they act impulsively, with no long-term vision. They don't care who they harm because they've reached young adulthood without love or empathy in their own lives, and they don't know how to feel it for anyone else. And they don't associate consequences with their actions because frequently there are none.

Had this criminal been arrested instead of getting shot, it's entirely possible that he would have been issued an ankle monitor and released on home detention.

It all goes back to eating lead paint chips off the windowsills as children.
We only have less than half that population here in Pittsburgh, yet since the animalistic punks and half-dead junkies have forced many businesses to leave downtown. Now we have empty office buildings downtown or totally empty buildings of all sizes. My daughter's job down there will be done at the end of the month, as the property owner had to double her boss' rent. My one son-in-law's office closed up and moved out of town, out of the county up to Butler. (Good for him, as that's where they live.) Our mayor, the Honorable Ed Gainey just turns the other cheek as he doesn't like to see his people get arrested at young ages, as a record may ruin their lives. Obviously the punks' lives are more important than the college-educated humans that made downtown what it once was, as they raise their families as best they can. Arrests are way down on the South Side, the main party section of PGH. The reason being is the police work an all out blitz on Fridays, Saturdays, and Steeler days. They even had a urine control to curb the public urination problem.
About the lead paint chips, many of these kids did grow up in squaller, poorly-maintained public housing, etc., that actually does impede a child's normal growth, according to what I've read. There's a big push to remove all the lead water pipes in the USA I just read somewhere yesterday.
I think all the kids just is a need a good butt-whoopin'.

Edit to add: Beemer guy hit the nail on the head.

Same here in the Cleveland Ohio area and it spreads to the suburbs. Good to hear something good has happened. Somehow it's gotta stop, not sure how. I'm prepared but not sure how the scenario will play out. We walk 2 miles a day on rt 21 in Independence Ohio and a lot of undesirable people drive by us. Larry

And despite being shot while committing a crime he's unlikely to change his ways. I expect he will feel victimized and justified in continued preying on society. Ultimately, the perp will probably die a young death having wreaked havoc while he existed. Call me cynical, but there seems to be little to no turning around these lives.

A close friend who is a nurse worked for years at the Shock-Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Hospital in downtown Baltimore. She spoke of encountering "frequent flyers"...patients who were there being treated for gunshot wounds for the second or even third time.

Now, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but if somebody were to shoot me, I'm pretty sure I would re-examine my life and my career choices, and try to avoid being shot again...

There is a reason I refer to such offenders as "criminally feral". Some parts of society have lost contact with reality. The sad truth is that we would all be better off if more offenders were shot without any hesitation, and cops and citizens who did so were applauded instead of vilified.

If it is gang related, could it possibly be some form of initiation to join gang?

That's certainly possible, but I think the more likely scenario is that the suspect and his buddies (there was car nearby with others inside, who took off when the shooting started) were just looking to steal a car to use in crime.

For several years, there's been a pattern in this region of juveniles from Baltimore committing carjackings, armed robberies, retail thefts, etc., throughout the metro area, and using stolen cars as getaway vehicles. It's an epidemic, but because addressing it would involve acknowledging the elephant in the room, nothing is being done about it.

Three weeks ago, in a nice, quiet suburban neighborhood just outside of Baltimore, a 50 year old father of three was shot and critically wounded in a robbery attempt outside his home, as he was getting into his car. Yesterday, police arrested a 15 year-old for that crime. He was identified because he'd worn the same clothing when he previously committed an armed robbery on a transit bus; in that instance he forced a passenger at gunpoint to transfer money via a cash app to his mother's bank account. You can't make this stuff up...

I've travelled extensively, but in almost 72 years, I've never lived more than 25 miles from the spot where I was born. I scarcely recognize this place anymore... :(

Before retiring to WI, I worked in Washington, DC and several years ago the city was experiencing 3 – 4 carjackings a day. This had been going on for months. One day, two armed men decided to carjack a late model car. Their mistake was that it was being driven by an FBI agent. The armed car jackers ordered the driver out of the car and when he exited, he drew his gun and shot both of them dead. This incident was reported in the local news. There wasn't another carjacking incident in Washington, DC for the next 9 months!

Now THAT is a "happy ending"
