Carrying a gun and a baby

I've just never been impressed with the stopping power of an infant. I say carry the gun.

I carried mine and my wife carried a S&W Model 39-2 with 8 or 9 loaded mags in her diaper bag. Of course, that was in Detroit and the only rule was the law of the jungle. Anything badder than you would put you in the morgue. The trick was to be badder first.

Depends on the size of the infant. I prefer the heavier 10 pound babies for deeper thumping, some prefer the lighter, faster, 8 pounders for a faster backswing.

Yep, them 10 pounders do pack a wallop by I just don't pack enough powder to achieve the proper velocity. And the speed loaders are kind of big and cumbersome.

I pocket carry an airweight 38, the baby is in a stroller or being held by mom. When we are out my primary responsibility is for the security of the most important family in the state, MINE. My job transitioned from pushing the stroller to scanning parking lots, going through doors first and making sure everyone is in the car before I get in. I do this so that if something happens, I am NOT holding the baby (now #3) so that I am ready to react. This was a discussion my wife and I had before we starting having kids but what should also be mentioned is that I am a cop so my wife was used to this behavior before we starting having children.

However, what did change once we had kids was that I stopped (for the most part) carrying my duty gun all the time and mostly carry my j-frame when I am off duty.

I always carried the 4" 625 on the hip when I was out with the little kids. The only problem I ever had was when my son lifted up my shirt just to show everybody what I was carrying.

I'm sure that problem got quickly corrected!

Norfdet, what about having kids prompted you to stop carrying your duty gun?

For me it had more to do with all of the associated stuff that comes along with having kids and not wanting the added bulk or weight. The other issue is where I live during the summer you can get high 90's with matching humidity, couple that with screaming kids and diaper bags, etc even a Glock 19 is more than I want to carry. Once you have kids there is a lot of bending, holding, chasing, corralling, etc. The instances of being made or exposing a gun are far greater than concealing a j-frame in a pocket with a speed-loader or speed-strip, etc or ankle carry; the j-frame is just easier to conceal and lighter to carry.
