I have 4 neighbors that carry a gun occasionally. I see them around for weeks at a time then they'll carry for a day or two and then not again for a week. I'm pretty sure the one guy's gun spends more time in hock than in a holster.

The idea of carrying only sometimes never made sense to me Why carry some times and not others? What is it about whatever you're doing now that makes it so inherently dangerous that you feel the need to carry this time? If it's so dangerous that you feel you need a gun why are you doing it?

Of course I realize that there are times when you just can't carry but I'm talking about just carrying when you feel like it

I carry pretty much every where I go. The only times I don't is if I go to family's house. My folks live in a very small town and there are a few loaded firearms in the house. So don't feel a need. And if I visit friends with little ones around I leave it at home or in the car. Those are the only reasons I don't see a need to carry. But I do always have a blade on me.

Concealed Carry Survey Results

Earlier this month, we conducted an informal survey of our members and newsletter subscribers to learn about the concealed carry habits of average gun owners.

The results were interesting.

Do you have a concealed carry license?
•Yes - 89.5%
•No - 9.9%
•No Responses - < 1%

Nothing unusual here. We expected that most people taking the survey would have a CCW permit.

How often do you carry a firearm?

•Virtually 24 hours a day - 22.9%
•Every time I leave the house - 31.0%
•Occasionally when I leave the house - 32.4%
•Never - 6.9%
•Other - 6.1%
•No Responses - < 1%

"Other" responses included:
•When I go into a threat area.
•When I leave town.
•Only when going to the range.
•On work days.

The answers here are surprising. Nearly a quarter of those who responded said they carry pretty much all the time, we assume even at home. And nearly 54% said they carry virtually all the time or at least every time they leave the house.

Try teaching the state-mandated carry class if you want to expand your book of interesting attitudes and beliefs. Examples:
1. One professional person from Oklahoma City assured me he knew exactly when he would be going "where he might need to carry" and would only carry then.
2. Another insisted the OK law on use of deadly force was wrong, and he knew the US Constitution would protect him from state prosecution.
3. One interrupted the class to explain his theory of when and how to carry, and which gun this time.
4. Not to mention the women who planned never to load the gun, but scare off muggers with an empty gun.
5. Or the crack shot that was going to give multiple attackers "one to the hip" drawing from concealment before they could pull the trigger.

Oh well...........

I used to carry every day. But it was such a hassle. I got the iPack app for my iPhone. I get a text every morning informing me if I should carry that day or if it is safe not to. :D

I have a friend who sometimes carries in an ankle holster. He rarely if ever practices drawing from said holster, and looks at me crazy when I tell him about dry practice. I have another friend who teaches pistol classes and even sets up a fan so he can practice drawing in adverse wind conditions. Takes all kinds I guess.

It could be your friends don't have a comfortable carry setup. A bad carry rig can make for a rough day. Or perhaps they have to go to their kid's school, or can't carry at work... Probably like many of you, I went through a few holsters, guns and belts before I found what works for me.

I am lucky, my boss encourages employees to carry on the job. When I first got my CCL, I was not comfortable with carrying, due to inexperience. I took several classes, and while I am not high speed low drag, I am confident in my abilities now.

I carry at all times away from home. My wife has a "deer in the headlights" look when she can't carry.
We don't carry at home, most of the time, but we know where each and every gun is in the house...and it's condition. (Small house, not an issue, trust me). No kids in the house, so also not a problem.
I can't prove it, but I suspect we both carry in theaters, and Post Offices, etc. The local FedEx facility has done a remodel recently, and while I'm sure they just overlooked it, the "no firearms" sign didn't make it through through the remodel. But, then, I only go there to ship or receive guns, so pretty much a moot point.

The know-it-all folks never cease to amaze me with their knowledge of when to carry and what to carry for differing social conditions. I'm admittedly dumb enough not to know everything so I carry all the time, just in case.

The majority of permit holders I've encountered have been unarmed. While I didn't keep an exact count, if pushed to give a number I would have to say 2/3 - 3/4. My own brother obtained his permit about three years ago and has never carried.

i check with my magic eight ball every morning to forecast my carry... phhhbt! when ever and where ever i can legally carry, i do. i actually started a thread on home carry (which i do). very different attitudes and opinions on that too. rather have it and not need it, than the other way 'round. call me paranoid, gun nutt, or what have you, but if i'm dressed i have a gun on. lots of it also has to do with where you live. open carry is not an option down here, so at the very least its an lcp, or 442 for me.

It's great that you carry often. I would never tell you when or how to carry, but I must ask about 1) not carrying at your folks', 2) not carrying around 'little ones' at your friends.

With respect to 1), do you think bad things never happen during the trip to and from even a small town like your folks'? Travelling is an activity where you'll be exposed to many people who may or may not have nice intentions.

With respect to 2): My thoughts about carrying around little ones (especially my own) is that I make it a point to always be armed around kids. There are sick people in society who would just love to snatch up little kids and take them away to do unspeakable things to them before killing them. I don't know how I could live with myself if something happened to kids in my family or friends family, and I was completely helpless to intervene only because I chose to be unarmed that day. Our kids are our precious ones, and they deserve to be protected.

I ALWAYS CARRY as long as its lawful for me to do so. It's almost ALWAYS a full sized handgun in meaningful caliber (.357 mag, .41 mag.), and I always have multiple reloads. It's just a way of life for me that I choose.

I carry when I feel.like it. Why not? Its America. Not quite sure why you have to judge people who carry when they want? I realize anything can happen anywhere and ive accepted that. Is that so hard to do?

Ever since the 2008 housing crisis, more homeless and the likes have encampments in obscure areas.

My dog and I like to walk where he can run free. Often I run up on these homesteads by accident.

I feel better knowing I don't have to get back to my vehicle for a gun if needed.

If I'm on my feet it ain't under my seat.:D

I saw a statistic somewhere from a survey, the results of which showed that an estimated 30 percent of Michigan ccw license holders actually carry! My wife, and several friends are not counted in that number. As for me, I carry everyday, and everywhere I am permitted - that includes church.

It seems to me that anyone who has taken the time (and expense) to obtain a concealed carry permit is at least "aware" of the potential dangers that exist in society. That they choose to carry only "sometime", indicates that they have decided to take a chance on nothing happening the remainder of the time. Not a wise decision in my opinion, but I'm not the one who will have to live with the consequences if they are wrong.

Do you acknowledge and that you can die in a car accident but still drive? There are many things we acknowledge but we take many of those risks regardless. I guaranty I could look at all of your lives and see the stupid decisions you make that will kill you before a shooting ever does.
