Carrying out of State

I do a lot of traveling all through New England and through Jersey quite often. And I want to be able to carry since I go through/to some interesting areas.

What would be the best way to legally do this or how would you recommend doing this?

I have been looking on line for more info on this and not sure how to go about it. Not sure if I would need to get a permit from each state. Or if there is a federal permit that would allow me to travel more freely.

I'm sure I'm not the only one out there who travels like this.

But I was still wondering if I would need to get one from each state or if there was one state that everything kinda honored. But from the list on the main page didn't see that.
 
Generally you'll have to get a permit from your home state and then you can only carry in states that have a reciprocal agreement with your home state. Some states have a provision for out-of-state permits, but it's pretty rare. I seriously doubt that you'll be able to find a way to carry in NJ since it's nearly impossible for residents there to obtain a carry permit.

The only Federal provision I'm aware of is the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act, but you have to be an active or retired LEO to take advantage of this (with certain requirements needing to be met). R,
 
Get one from your home state, then add Florida (non-resident), which is good in 22 states, I think. Maine, NH, CT all do non-resident licenses (I have 'em); Mass used to and was pretty easy to deal with, actually. NJ/NY? Not in this lifetime; same with California, but I can't think of any excuse to enter California.

I have to look through my ID case to be sure of what specific licenses I have, but enough to be GTG in 27-30 states. Then there is HR218 ...

The information is there, but you have to look more than one place.

The NE is the worst region of the country for visitors because most states don't honor other states or issue non-resident permits.

Vermont does not require a license. MA, NH, ME issue non-res, and on MD, NJ, NY you're pretty well out of luck.

There is no such thing as a Federal carry license for non-LEO.
 
Thanks for all the good info so far to all. Unfortunately I have heard what everyone is saying about jersey before. I lived there for 10 yrs and most my family is there, so I am there quite frequently.

Doug M, about the Florida permit I did see that it was accepeted by many states, but didn't look like any of the New England states accepeted it, maybe I am wrong. I actually have the Florida permit application on my desk right now too.

I am a resident of CT so I already have that license, but plan to finish looking into it little more then will start applying very soon for the other states.

Guess I will be having many licenses.

To complicate matters even further, some states will not allow visitors to carry with a non-resident license.

For example, Colorado and Ohio do not have reciprocity, so I cannot carry concealed in CO with my home state (Ohio) license. But Colorado and New Hampshire share reciprocity. So you would think that if I had a NH license (which I do), I could conceal a handgun while visiting my relatives in Colorado. Not so, because Colorado does not recognize third party non-resident licenses.

Kansas, Michigan, Florida, New Hampshire, and South Carolina are the same way.

The only way to legally carry in those states is for them to recognize your home state's license as valid, or obtain a non-resident license FROM one of those six states. And the only ones of them that offer non-resident licenses are New Hampshire and Florida.

So the only way to carry in KS, MI, CO, or SC is to have them recognize your home license (aka reciprocity, state attorney generals set this up). The only way to carry in FL and NH is through reciprocity or by obtaining their non-resident license.

MI recognizes resident permits from ALL states.

Still that's no comfort for visitors from states where the right to carry a handgun is infringed, but who have a non-resident license from Florida or Utah.

I would HIGHLY recommend NOT carrying thru NY or NJ. I know alot of people will give the old line "better to be judged by 12 than carried by six", but jail may be worse than death. My .02

Don't hesitate in getting a NH permit. They are actually quite easy for a non-resident to obtain, and we reciprocate with any state that honors our permit

With it and my home state license I get all the reciprocity that I would get with Florida, except for Texas, and for about 100 dollars less.
 
appreciate everyone's help.
I am filling out the Florida paperwork tonight and requesting the NH stuff tomorrow.

Hate the fact about not carrying in jersey, considering when you read the laws they seem so friendly to the ccw folks.

like some of the others I have an Ohio ccw and just applied for a NH a couple weeks ago.
I travel through Pa. and they do not accept ohio but the NH. liscene is good there.
I think I will look at FLA and get theres as well if it covers more states.

I was reading through this forum and I had to chuckle to myself and say "I'd just as soon avoid New Jersey to start with!".....

Looking at that reciprocity chart made me want to move to Alaska.
