Case hardened frames

Having said that....why do you file the metal?
Do you refinish them afterwards, and if so, why go thru the hassle?
Please no wiseguy remarks from anyone, just asking.

This is a project gun for me. I am ditching the lock, and plugging the hole and filling the slot. I'm also going to reshape the front sight base and the ejector shroud to more closely approximate a "proper" pre war configuration. I "squarified" the rear of the grip frame the other day. I will rust blue the gun afterwards. Otherwise, I wouldn't be fooling with it.

Why did I get the colored one rather than a blued one? That was the only kind I could find! Other than the T.R. one with the big gold thing on the side, I've found them pretty hard to come across.

Me? a wiseguy? I don't know that anyone would consider me wise!

I hear ya...I'm holding out hope that maybe, just maybe, another "version" of the M21 is in the offing. If it does, I'm a buyer of both the 21 and the 22.

If you really like the new M21's, why not get one? I really love my 21-4 even though it is nickel vice blue. There are pix on this forum to look at it

Slim, I've seen yours, it's a beaut.

Everytime I see the left side of a Smith with the hole it's ugly to me(the hole that is, not the gun), has NOTHING to do with function. I do own a M500, but would sell it in a heartbeat if Smith made an unlocked version. The 500 is the only locked Smith I own. I may get a 21 if Smith does not make a lock free model in the next year or two.
I definitely would NOT buy any locked Smith, if there were a non-locked model of the same available. Plenty of older mint guns to be had, rather than the pimply ones. I own M64's, 65's, 10's...all lock free.
This is only my opinion, I realize others differ. Life goes on.

I know Ruger uses a chemical to give their guns a color hardened appearance. Does S&W actually color case harden their guns or do they also use a chemical like Ruger?

Not wanting to start any arguments.

Arguments seem to follow some here, which is why for the first time since I've been here I've decided to use the ignore feature.
I'm weary of the know-it-all, chest puffing, boorish people. They have nothing but negativity surrounding them. They're quite full of themselves. Legends in their own minds.

I love this beauty

Here's my 22-4 that I have already dug into. It is not finished in this photo. Since this photo, I have reshaped the ejector shroud and done a few other odd and end things. It still needs to be blued.

That's looking good, AND no weep hole to boot.

Cool, man!

Too bad the factories never really produced decent ammo for the .44 special, or it would have been more popular and lasted longer....and we wouldn't have to go through so much trouble to get one!

Had this 38/44 HD, scratched around a bit and came up with a 3" 44spl barrel & cyl. The next thing you know...
