Cast iron cookware and glass top stoves

Get a propane grill with a side burner - you get to enjoy outdoors and you can cook till your heart is content. With a propane grill, temperature regulation is pretty easy too. You can make pizza, biscuits, hell I've even baked a pound cake on a grill.

We have a propane stove and you can't bet gas. But for those with electric we also have one of those portable GasOne stoves that use the gas can which works good also, just make sure you have plenty of gas canisters as they are hard to find. We also have one of those NuWave PIC that works great with cast iron also. You can use either of these on the counter, so not to damage your stove and you can take them with you to cook outside on. We can never have too many burners when we cook for a large group and both of these have worked for us.

For less then a hundred bucks for then NuWave or $30.00 for the GasOne plus gas, do you wanna get momma mad and have to sleep on the sofa.

Been using it on our glass top stove for 10 years now without a problem.

However, we're "mindful" of the possibility of scratches so are extra careful when cooking with cast iron.

Well, I don't want to start a war over gas vs electric so I will tell a little story.
My wife was raised with electric all she ever used and was really frightened of the open flame on a gas stove. She married me and our first house had gas and now she will not cook on anything else.
She also now uses cast iron and will drive a suburban/full sized pickup.
I'm still working on that other thing.....

I've always felt glass topped stoves are for people who don't cook.
It's just there to look good.
Fire, gas or wood, is the best way to cook. Unfortunately, when renting homes, you're usually stuck with electric stoves.

I use cast iron skillets on my glass top all the time, never had a problem. Just don't swirl or move the pan around on the top like with regular pans, leave it alone and cook.

Yes if your careful its OK. But I rarely use my favorite cast iron fry pan anymore since my wife bought a couple of those green coated things they advertise on late-nite TV. I hate to admit it but those damn things really do work just as well as the pitchman says. I love 'em.

You'd be wrong there! I can't prove it here but I'm here to tell you that I COOK. A lot and very well. I'll confess that I would prefer gas and I agree that it is best for most all kinds of cooking and for most all kinds of utensils.

But the cost of converting my kitchen would be prohibitive. I've also discovered that gas cook tops are a lot more expensive that electric. Retirement pension and SS severely limit my options in many areas of my life. This is just one of them.

As Ray Stevens says in his songs, "I'm just makin' the best of a bad situation...." I have learned over the years how to use electric stove tops to get the best results that I can. Could I do better with gas? absolutely.

But make no mistake about it, I COOK! :p :D

Jack, I don't think the glass tops can get the high heat that some foods need. I don't know, I'll look into it.

Like some home ovens don't get hot enough to cook a pizza correctly.

You may be right about that. But I get all the heat I need for the dishes on my menu. I know it can get hot enough to burn the bacon once in a whole.:D

Yup, I've got a couple of those greenie things too and I cook almost everything on them most days. After almost a year and a half using them and they look like new. Just don't use any metal utensils on them.

The last frypan we bought was one of those green ones. The bottoms are not flat so the pan rocks on a glass top stove. Of course, then you end up with hot spots and that wrecks the pan.

I use an old beater cast iron pan on the gas grill, but I'd have to shovel too much snow to get to it right now.

L&M Supply (our local farm store) sells Lodge cast iron, so I might just make an investment. I grew up with gas and prefer it, but I'm still only part of the equation. Glad to hear others use cast iron on glass tops with success. I'll just have to be carefull.

Yeah, tell me about about granite couner tops and sharp knives -- or at least knives that USED to be sharp! I think I have her convinced after the last time I brought the knives back into shape that "Well, I only do it once in a while" and "The salesman said I could cut on the counter top" just isn't good enough!

Hmmm. . . maybe I get knives that stay sharp and she keeps her glass top stove. . .

Mine are both flat bottom. You must have gotten a bad one. Whack it on the bottom with a mallet. :D

My first wife was playing the game like that, when we got married we had electric and she said she couldn't cook on electric. Next we got a house with gas she said she was afraid of the house blowing up. She never cooked we ate out most of the time that I didn't cook.
