CBS "Sunday Morning" gun focus.

About 3 weeks ago, Seith Meyers on NBC did a complete 15 minute segment of nothing but bashing guns and bashing gun owners and bashing the 2nd adminment. I'll never watch his show again. I don't like him or his horrible fake humor. Google it.
I'll have to take your word for it. I have no interest what so ever in wasting one iota of my time on people like him.

My problem is with lack of context. When they tell you of how many "children" get killed that that goes to 19 or more, or if an Leo shoots a 19 yo hacking people to death that counts as a dead child. They don't tell you how far down the list of accidental deaths guns actually rank. They don't tell you that while gun crimes or gun related suicides go down with gun control, the overall numbers stay about the same, they just find a different method.

What everyone knows, but is afraid to say is: He who has the guns, has the power.

The Aussie segment said everything but: "I own a winery/vinary. I am the elite and no one beside us upper class should own a weapon like my Browning 9mm and centerfire rifle for varmint & pest control and to keep the lower classes in their places.

History does not support your statement!
In recent times, the Jewish Ghetto in Lodz Poland, during the WWII period. The various SE Asia conflicts after WWII. The totalitarian regimes of the Soviet Union/Russia taking over the eastern blok countries, the Mao era of China, Pol Pot in Cambodia, North Korea, Iraq under Hussein, etc. Banning of firearms created genocide, which 'fixed' all opposition. Lots more examples available including lots involving the British, French, Spanish empires of both fairly recent and earlier. The right to self govern was taken away by banning resulting in genocide, e.g. fixing but not in a positive way.

Famous quote of Robert Heinlein - “When you vote, you are exercising political authority, you're using force. And force, my friends, is violence. The supreme authority from which all other authorities are derived.” ☺

I'm confused. Everything you listed proved my point. What has banning fixed?

Soviet Union? What is that? El gono is what the Soviet Union is.

Sadam Hussein? Who is he? Dead is who he is.

and on and on

The Brits banned the Jews from getting into Palestine. How'd that work out? It's called Israel now.
The US govt banned the sale of alcohol. How's that working.
Illegal drugs are banned in America. How's the war on drugs going?

Eastern block countries? When I was serving in Germany we were worried about the Warsaw Pact forces. Where are they now? How many Americans even know what the Warsaw Pact was?

I'm not sure that he understood that you were using sarcasm. You guys are both saying the same thing. And of course you're right.

The only problem with posting on the forum is that we are, as my dad always said: "Preaching to the choir"!!

We need, as Ringo is doing, to start educating those who have been lied to by the "Main Stream Media", and do so in a non threatening way, so that they discover the truth all by themselves.

Problem is, we ain't got much time!!! The most important election of our lifetime is only a few months away, and the forces of darkness are arrayed against us.

Best Regards, Les

Let's hope he knows I am still using it. :D

Illogical arguments of banning anything, accomplishes nothing! Banning books, banning drugs, banning alcohol, banning guns, banning a group of people, isolationism, etc. slippery slope, as is discussion (arguing) with people outside yourself or similar viewpoints! I was attempting to make that point but did a poor job of it, and nothing was against your point. Your point of how many people know what the Warsaw Pact was shows that books and history are already being banned. Omission of learning or selective teaching is accomplishing a lot, death of a thousand cuts! Something the other side is accomplishing. Sorry for the confusion! 😞

It is nice to know we are in agreement. As you can tell I am against banning because it does not work and wastes time, effort and money in attempting to enforce it.

Sure banning works it disarms the good gun guys. The bad guys will always get guns. Ever hear of the black market? The media is in the dark like where mushrooms grow. I predict when we get a woman president kiss all the semi auto guns good bye that's only the start.

When people say things like that to me, I ask them, "So then the Constitution could 'evolve' to the point where it PROMOTES judicial torture and again embraces slavery and Jim Crow?

They often tell me "no", but can NEVER tell my WHY.

The Constitution has evolved - they're called Amendments.

The Originalists among us would never have seen the end of slavery, nor would they have allowed the discussion that led to DC vs. Heller.

While I'm not sold 100% on the idea of a Living Constitution, times and mores change - and we need to adapt.

Ever made made fun of silly Blue Laws? Exactly.

So we shouldn't enforce crime, because it's a futile effort?

We shouldn't try to stop the flow of poison into our communities, simply because we CAN'T GET IT ALL?

There is no enforcement strategy that is 100% effective. Should we then not bother?

These reductionist approaches to a solution appear to leave only binary choices, but the truth is one of degrees. Can you make something better? Can you be safer? There are no absolutes outside of d&t.

I would only offer that their is a lot of room between banning and doing nothing.

Joe kills a person while driving a car.

Solution: Ban car driving.

My reaction: it won't work. Banning does not work.

Plus I'm not quite sure what you mean by enforcing a crime. I will chock that up to a typo.

We are in complete agreement!
My asphasia kicked in so it made me more muddled than usual.
Just received notice from the U that the fall sessions start on 8/22, and wanting confirmation that I would be attending both group and individual sessions. Insurance has to approve the individual. It is fun working with grad students, just before they go out in the real world. Most common comment is " You are like my Dad, except we have a better discussion as neither gets upset". Most of their Dads are rural people, so in many ways it is refreshing to know that our generation's values are still known! ☺
Though at the U the other side is in full force, both students and faculty. 😛

CBS Sunday Morning is one of my favorite shows that I watch every week. This episode on gun control was unbiased and informative. Though the data is skewed because of their small population, Montana has one of the highest pct. of gun-possessing families and one of the lowest in gun-related crimes. I thought it funny when the Montana sheriff said that "gun control' in Montana pertained to how steady a rifle was held!

The flip side to a ban is criminal enforcement. What is our legal code, but a bunch of rules banning certain behaviors?

No ban, and NO LAW is worth the paper upon which it's written until there is enforcement of compliance. The real question should be what are we willing to give up to achieve total compliance? What is the adequate balance of personal freedom versus safety?

Secret weapon???

Eastern block countries? When I was serving in Germany we were worried about the Warsaw Pact forces. Where are they now? How many Americans even know what the Warsaw Pact was?

Wasn't the 'War Saw' a secret weapon that the red commies were going to use to invade Eastern Europe?
