I just picked-up two boxes of CCI Blazer .44 Special. The box states 200 gr. JHP, but I know the new stuff is coming with GDHP bullets. My bullets even look like GDHP's and the box stock # is the same as the new GDHP.

Anyone know what the original JHP's look like? Anyway to really tell if these are the GDHP's? I'm thinking maybe they just used some older JHP marked boxes?

Thanks.

I could be wrong, but I don't think they've ever loaded anything but Gold Dots in that load. After all, a Gold Dot is a JHP. I've shot several boxes of it, and have a few now. It is all loaded with Gold Dots, but I don't recall how the boxes are marked.

Thanks for the info.

I just notice all the new boxes say "GDHP", where as mine says "JHP". My bullets do look like the ones pictured below.

I might carry this stuff for an occasional SD load and just want to make sure I'm carring a quality HP.

Look into the hollow point cavity, due to the way they are made a GDHP will have a jacket colored or "gold" dot in the bottom.

I may be off, but I seem to remember that Speer used to load the Uni-Cor bullet in that, instead of the Gold Dot. The difference between those? I wish I could say for sure.

Both boxes have bullets with a gold dot in the bottom of the hollow point cavity.

I feel pretty confident these are GD's.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks, I've been carrying Silvertips in my Charter woods bummin' pistol, may have to switch.

The published velocities (and we know those can vary):

Winchester 44 Smith & Wesson Special 200 gr. Super-X® Silvertip® Hollow Point:
Muzzle Velocity: 900 fps / Barrel Length: 6.50"

CCI Blazer 44 Special 200 gr. GDHP:
Muzzle Velocity: 920 fps / Barrel Length: 5.15"

Thanks. Someone published elsewhere that he was only getting in the high 700s with the Silvertips from a 4" barrel. Anyway, it shoots well from my Charter, and I may try the GTs, too.

With the Blazer 200 grain load I was getting 850 FPS out of my 696. I no longer have a Charter, but back when I did, it only did a little over 700 FPS, and just barely hit 750 out of my 6.5" model 29.

I haven't tried the Blazer in the 29, but it would probably be OK.

Speer offers this same bullet in a metal case. It is marked Speer Gold Dot on the box, so I assume it is the same as the aluminum cased Blazer. I shoot the Blazer stuff because it's cheaper, but extraction is iffy in my 296, 696 and 624. When I carry one of them I don't carry the Blazers for this reason.
