I just recently moved to KY from Ohio. I know there is reciprocity between the two states but I want to keep it legal. Should I transfer my CCW to KY or just wait til it expires and then renew in KY? Just curious.

When I got my Ky CCW back in 05 they made a big deal about you updating your permit information when you moved within the state. If you are permanently living in Kentucky for now and have an address in the state I would highly recommend getting the Ky permit. Think how it will raise an eyebrow if you get pulled over while carrying and give the officer a Ky driver's license with one address and an Ohio CCW with another.

Just thinking on the safe side and just my .02 cents.

Welcome to the forum by the way!

I always err on the side of caution so my suggestion (FWIW) is to get the KY CCW (transfer) stuff in order. I really cannot see a down side to this.

I would suggest to get the KY CCDW, & keep Ohio too. I could be wrong, I don't think they transfer anyway. Either way, you do need your KY permit. It's possible the class you took in Ohio satisfies KY's requirements, so you may not have to re-take the class, if you have or can get documention that you took it.

You can't "transfer" a CHL, as each state has its own laws.

Your immediate problem is with Ohio, which requires you to keep your address current as a resident in Ohio.
Ohio does not issue non-resident CHLs.

Your Ohio carry license may no longer be valid; suggest you contact Ohio immediately and cease carrying until you get an official answer.

My suggestion is to call the Ky State Police HQ in Frankfort and ask for a clarification on what is needed. You have to be a resident of at least 6 months before a CCDW will be issued. As stated before there might be an issue with a Ky driver license and a Ohio issued carry permit.

This should answer your question:

Can I transfer my concealed weapons license or training certificate from another state to Kentucky?

There is no statutory authority for another state's license to carry a concealed weapon to be transferred to Kentucky. Individuals that wish to apply for a license to carry a concealed deadly weapon in Kentucky must meet the requirements set forth in KRS 237.110, including the residency and training requirements. Currently, no waiver of the training requirement is authorized based upon prior completion of out of state training approved for obtaining a license in another jurisdiction.

If you're ignoring the postings because I am not currently a KY resident, then you should know that I am a former KY resident and have taught CHL classes in several states. You can't transfer a license to KY, period. And if you are carrying on any other state (like Ohio) that does not issue non-resident licenses, you are probably carrying without a valid license as a KY resident. If you had a CHL from a state like FL that issues non-resident licenses, it would still be valid and you could legally carry.

My apologies OKFC, I see what your saying now. I dont know how I missed your post before.

You can find most of the answers to your questions by going to the ky state police website.

To answer your question simply, KY doesn't allow the transfer of concealed carry licenses from other States to KY, and whatever training you took in Ohio to obtain your permit can't be transferred either. ( Except in very specific circumstances relating to peace officers and military personnel )

You have to take the class here in KY and go through all the hoops all over again. In addition, I don't know about OH, but in KY you have to notify the KSP if you change addresses within 30 days or you are subject to a fine. The guidelines also state that if you move out of state and are actually no longer a KY resident you have to inform them of that too, and your license may be revoked since you are no longer a KY resident. So you may want to check on that as far as your Ohio permit goes...

Just as an aside to awkward situations...in KY if you are pulled over, for example, you are not required to tell the officer you are CC, nor show him your license...I know in some states you are required to do so and just thought I'd throw that in there...they may ask for it, but you are not required to do so unless prompted. Just another reason it's a good idea to retake the class, especially if you change residency, as all the rules and regs are different state to state...
