Changing carry for Texas' new law?

As most of you already know, CHL holders in Texas can open carry beginning next year.

With this in mind, I've been considering changing what and how I carry. Understand also that I like 'nice stuff'. Think 'barbecue gun'.

Today I might have a J frame or shield in my pocket or IWB.

Going forward, I'm thinking of getting an engraved SP101 or 640 which I'd carry in a nice leather OWB holster. I think that would say; I'm packing heat...with class!

I'm also thinking of just putting the new-condition factory magnas, or the Coco Bolo hardwoods on a K in a leather OWB - as that's all that's going to show out of the holster anyway. Though probably not the magnas because they'll get dinged up.

I can't really argue with the BBQ gun concept, but I'm not a fan of OC even though I live in one of the more enlightened states that even did away with permit requirements for residents. I think OC puts a practitioner at a disadvantage a CCW doesn't have to deal with. That said, a beautifully engraved J or K with custom grips in a custom carry rig would make an elligant accessory ffor those special occasions among like-minded gentry
 
PLEASE don't turn this into an OC v CC Debate. If you can't contribute to the OC's query, just don't reply.

I'm in a quandary as to keep carrying my Shield in an OWB rig, to go back to my G19, or even my XDMc in nice leather rigs.

I do have a CQC retention holster for my Shield, but...

I'm also considering a leather Cross-Draw rig for my Ruger Blackhawk. :)
 
I'm certainly not afraid to carry a fine handgun in a well made rig.
But I don't wear my Armani suit to change oil in my lawnmower. ;)
There's a time and place for most good things. This is America, land of the free, home of the brave....and....you're in Texas. So get a couple of different rigs, casual, dress and, of course, formal (for weddings and funerals).
That includes your pistola.:D

I like nice stuff too, but that's not why I would carry.

So, do you want to show off or do you want to protect yourself and family? If you want to show off, get the fanciest grips you can with a hand tooled holster.

However, if you want to use the gun for defense, there is only one choice, carry the one you can use most effectively. That doesn't mean the gun can't be the BBQ one.

I personally like BBQ and I like fancy side arms....The two just naturally go together.






A man just has to please himself....
Whether one carries openly or concealed is up to him and him alone.

I personally don't adhere to the out cries of the jaybirds & peckerwood naysayers that's hangin around
these parts now'n'days atall. ;)

That is beautiful. Ive thought about getting that kind of holster. But watch out, to others on the forum its the wrong reason to carry a gun and you will be judged!

Interesting point and probably the truth. Afterall no one would mess with chuck norris armed or not.

Well 2 people did make that mistake in 94

This is my every day carry if I'm not working on the farm. I think it hides good enough under a shirt and looks good enough to wear in the open. I use it on my pants belt so there is not an extra belt showing when I hide it under an open shirt. Larry

No OC for me. It will make going to the range easier, as accidental exposure will not be an issue.

Never been to a BBQ where there was no alcohol of any sort. I consider alcohol (in any quantity) & firearms a no-go.

Here's my commentary:

If you open carry a BBQ gun in a fancy rig just remember that's no different than wearing a diamond encrusted, gold Rolex, or a 5 karat diamond with 200 points of baguettes (or whatever the ladies wear in that style). It's cool, it's showy, and it makes you a target. The two latter items are just that - targets. The former item, the showy handgun, also makes you the first person any bad guy wants to remove from the scene.

You don't have to adhere to anything and you can call anyone names but if you open carry the name you will be called is the worst one possible - I used it above. Target.

Okay, you're honest and law abiding, too, nobody says different, except the rest of the world will "FEEL" your "little friend" as well as see it and you will make folks uncomfortable whilst exercising your rights that you do not have to exercise in order to protect yourself.

So, I'm a bad poster, too, I joined into the OC versus CC debate but the simple question deserves two answers, a simple yes or no and, if no, the reasons why. Because if I prevent one gun owner from getting hurt because s/he didn't open carry his or her weapon then I did my job as a polite member of society.
 
Not for me.

Gave up open carry and trying to impress folks that I carry a gun when I hung up my Fanner .50's. I think I was 8.

Seriously, a gun is a tool...nothing more. All my tools show signs of use...guns included.

For the record, my 642 has pearl (fake, of course) grips that facilitate concealment. My 60 NY-1 rocks Spegels. My point...I like nice stuff but not at all inclined to show off a tool...for the sole purpose of impressing folks.

Just thinkin'.......

Hmmmmm.....New cars make me a target. Guess I better buy a Yugo. Nice watches make me a target, oh well back to the timex. A fine hat makes me a target....guess I need a cloth cap. Good boots are definately making me a target...back to brogans. A nice suit just screams target so I probably swing by goodwill for a mismatched jacket and shinybutt slacks. Actually, a pair of worn cotton drawstring pants and a sarape and a straw sombrero with some rubber flipflops. I won't look like a target. I'd lose my job, but then I could go on welfare, then I wouldn't be a target. I'd be a threat...
What'll I do with my nonglocks....

Sigh.....just can't win around here....

I'd bet a silver dollar to road apple they would not. But then again, some are jest naturally argumentative about everything anyways,
there's dis-agreeing and there's some that are jest plain ol dis-agreeable sorts, I guess. ;):D

I know this has become a popular thing to say lately among the open carry crowd, but I have to say I have all kinds of rights I have chosen not to exercise in my life and I have not yet seen one of them lost because of it. If you actually take the time to think about it, that saying makes no sense at all.

In most of the country, a parent has the right to use corporal punishment on his child. Do you believe a parent should use corporal punishment whether warranted or not, just so they don't lose the right to do so? On the other hand, the abuse of ones rights can result in the loss of rights. A parent who goes "too far" with corporal punishment, in the eyes of "society," can potentially lose his parental rights and even lose his freedom when the state pursues a dependency and neglect case or the parent is charged with child abuse.

More to the point, people legally carrying guns are no longer welcome in Chilis, Sonic, Whataburger, Starbucks, Target, Chipotle, Panera Bread and I am sure a number of other places expressly because of the open carry people who pushed the issue with those places.

Perhaps "A right abused is a right lost?"

You might be right, but it pretty much says that people around here can't have a civil discussion.

You know, the "other side" of the guns rights issue likes to paint us as unreasonable zealots and prone to violence. Turning a discussion about the merits of open vs concealed carry into name calling and veiled threats sure plays into their hands.

We all need to learn to have intelligent and respectful discussions even where we don't agree, and not resort to calling people peckerwoods or jaybirds or making veiled threats.
