In light of tkdguy's thread about resistance in NY to their law, Rep Rangel might just need to change his tune about the South and look to his home state.

I personally found Rangel's remarks offensive. It sounds like Charlie is sort of gloating, the attitude being, We have whipped the NY rednecks in line, now we just need to get the dumb southerners straightened out. In that light, New Yorkers should be just as incensed at Charlie's remarks as we are down here in the land of cotton, and S&Ws, and ARs, and Rugers, and etc.;)

Here is the article about Rangel's remarks, and below that, my Facebook post from last night.
Rep. Charlie Rangel on Guns:

Do these people have a clue what they are doing? Does Rep Rangel realize that he probably just recruited another 50,000 members for NRA, and maybe a half-million dollars in contributions? Did he say that on purpose? What was he thinking, do you reckon? Us poor old ignorant Southerners just don't know what's good for us. We need to be lectured by a tried-and-censured tax cheat like Charlie Rangel. Good luck, Charlie, on the efforts of the likes of you and Barack Obama and Chuckie Schumer and Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Cuomo and anyone else from NYC, DC, Chicago, etc. changing Southern Culture.

I was incensed reading Rangel's comments...until I listened and heard what he actually said. Now I am incensed at your quotation. Rangel did not say what you quoted...not even close...and any rational person will agree, I suspect.

I find it increasingly annoying and hurtful to the vast majority of 2A proponents when people simply make up stuff or invent "facts."

Be safe.

Hubris. That's the word I'm looking for. Charlie states NY created a "Model Set" of laws that everyone came together on and they only need to "overcome" some "Southern" attitudes to make these changes nationwide. He doesn't have to travel to the south to learn how unpopular these ideas are. Come to Vermont and address our state legislature, which is in session, and you'll get a taste of what you'd find in the southern states. This guy lives in his own world, divorced from the realities of life in real America, playing to a handful of liberal constituents.

Just for you, I will admit that I shouldn't have used quotes, and I will remove them.

However, I believe any rational person would have seen my preface, "It sounds like . . . . . the attitude being," would have realized that what I was expressing was my belief that Rangel was expressing exactly that sentiment. I still believe that was his sentiment. I was wrong to use quotes. A brain cramp, I guess.

You said you listened to Rangel's statement, and implied you were not incensed after hearing them. Do you indeed agree that, as he stated, "some of the southern areas have cultures that we have to overcome"? If so, tell us just what part of Southern Culture you find offensive.

I realize you are glad you are from a progressive state like Maryland, as you expressed way back in the Fire Department thread. I am not from a progressive state, and frankly, I find some of the views you have expressed over the years on various subjects abhorrent. Also, I notice you do not have an NRA icon next to your name. Is NRA not progressive enough for you, or do you just choose to not "show your colors" as Lee suggested we do?

Rangel responded by saying: "Well I hope so. New York is a little different and more progressive in a lot of areas than some other states and some of the southern areas have cultures that we have to overcome."

He added: "But we do have a model set of what Republicans and Democrats, Conservatives and Liberals have come together and put the party labels behind them and come forward with something that says 'Hey, we may disagree, but one thing is clear that we have to do something' and that's exactly what they have done.'"

He would be spot on but for one fact. If you say RINO instead of Republican then I can agree with him. But no honest Conservative Republican would ever side with a Liberal Democrat when it comes to 2A issues. And I agree this isn't a "Southern" issue at all. I'm betting most of the Western states agree as well. Omitting thos districts that control all of California of course. If NY has done anything, it's that they will find they have just criminalized a lot of otherwise law abiding citizens. I'm not always pleased with Florida but no way will that garbage ever pass here.

Just before the last election I "disenrolled" as a registered Republican, mainly because the NY Republican party does not speak for me, and quite frankly neither does the Conservative party. This state is really a one party rule with the others throwing up a smokescreen of opposition, but when that clears they're all backslapping each other. There are exceptions, but not enough to matter.

Thanks for correcting your OP.

No, I was not incensed at Rangel's actual comments. I use my "state of incensement" for important stuff. Southerners trumpet their culture; and I find the South in most places simply wonderful.

In no way whatsoever do I view any part of "Southern Culture...offensive." Period! :mad: (Save some local food choices, of course.)

Lastly, please note my user name is not accompanied by any affiliation badge(s.) No affiliation defines who I am except for one. I am an American. If Mr. Ejector ever chooses to offer an American flag I will be among the first to add it.

Be safe.

PS:

Took a quick look through my history for the "Fire Department" post that upsets you. Could not find one that might apply but will continue to look. :confused:

"Progressive" = "Communist"
"Overcome" = "Eliminate"

Had to get the code words out of Charlie's quote.

All guys like Charlie are doing is further steeling the resolve of those he reviles. Look at the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show - we now have boat companies, archery vendors and other non-firearm vendors pulling out (and probably losing their deposits) to support the Second Amendment.

We shoud also thank Charlie for the heads up. We'll be ready for the "overcoming".
