The seductive Model 39s as collectors' subculture.

Beautiful pre-39. can not make out Sn.? Is the left grip panel correct?

Yeah I noticed that too. I haven't seen a factory "transitional" pre-39 with the grip cut for the longer safety, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. If the S/N was higher (say 2600ish) I'd feel better about that possibility. As is I'd have to say these are later stocks.

Thank you!!

I posted it about a year ago - only one posted response..

Pre 39 Engraved -Thanks George!

Signed and engraved Russel Smith. Shipped Rex Firearms Dec 7th 1956.. I was very happy to find it! If the grips are incorrect more than happy to live with it.. :)

bigl1911,
You have one of the 20 known Class 'A' engraved pre-39's. There may be more but it's hard to know for sure with the records that S&W kept. I have traced the current owner of 9 of them (I have s/n 2152) however R. McMillan's s/n 1738 just sold recently at auction. Not sure who the new owner is. I have factory invoices for the 20 I mentioned but unfortunately, they don't include the serial numbers. Great gun to have

Thanks for the response..
I found a model 39, no dash with a serial number that starts with ‘A’
I didn’t think there are no dash 39s in the Axxxxxx serial numbers? But here’s one..
Thanks

Yes, plus other oddities. When you have the time read this entire thread from beginning to end instead of me rewriting captions or copy / paste from one of the reply windows.

That A120xxx is near the beginning of the A series (A106xxx range recorded. Then a few ... very few ... in the A124xxx range) still being a MODEL39. In and around this time the 39-2s were released but no hard and fast rule of EXACTLY what serial number the MODEL39s ended and the MODEL39-2s begin but there are some time overlapping dates when these shipped.

Enjoy the thread and the fellowship. Many serious collectors here. Chose wisely who you follow of those who present with only "factual" data.

Best Regards, Sal Raimondi, Sr.

Sal,

How are you doing. Nothing has come in that I thought you'd be interested in seeing.

Well, now, methinks meself IS among those of lofty status and proud of it, too. Now, if only I could remember a fifth of that which has flowed through my head on the subject . . .

Dammit. (Oops, a slight but appropriate slip and in the appropriate place, as I thought "Dammit" to be my given name inasmuch as my father would say, "Dammit, get in here!" or "Dammit, brush your teeth and get to bed!"

(The good news for me is the name we thought given me was tame compared to that given my brother: "Get your butt in here, Stupid!")

AJ, I'm hanging in there. Would love to get some time to come up to visit. this COVID situation has us all being 10x more cautious to go out.

Keep me in the loop. Best Regards, Sal Raimondi, Sr.

Sal,

Read most of this thread. At the gun show in Sebastian I ran across this: Gun Show M39-2 Since the price was right I had to buy it. Will take it to the range tomorrow to try it out.

Just picked up the 39-2 and my 52-2. It is remarkable how different they each feel in your hand.
