Ok I received the 4th edition of the Standard Catalog of S&W yesterday. Like one judo lesson, I'm dangerous.

Nickel Plated Smith and Wesson
C prefix rounded sight
four line address
S&W brand t-grip
five screw
No Model number
Serial on Butt matches Serial under barrel
Spur Hammer
Serial Number C1261XX
Aftermarket Pearl grips

So checking my research, I have a Square Butt K Frame 38 Special CTG Made between 1948 and prior to 1952 (Front Sight Change) 2 inch M&P

For the knowledgeable here am I researching correctly? or am I missing something? This is an heirloom pistol and I will be requesting a letter but it is the most intriguing firearm I own.

Thanks

CTG stands for "cartridge" and is not part of the model name. The proper name is ".38 Military & Police". Model numbers were assigned in 1957 and the .38 M&P became the Model 10. Your revolver can also be called a pre Model 10.

C103673 shipped in April, 1950.
C150035 and C152420 shipped in February, 1951.

So it seems likely, although not certain, that your C1261XX shipped sometime in 1950. But S&W did not ship guns in serial order. The letter will nail it down for you. When you get it, you can report back here. We'd all appreciate knowing what you find out.

I have a round butt, abt 1 year older (7/49) sister to your gun.
