Chopped 27-2

429244

Thanks, Paniolo!
Joel,
It just dawned on me we might be talking about the same heavy 273Gr. .44 bullet, so I went down to the gunroom and checked the number of my mold. 429244! I have loaded mine with 21.0 gr of H110. It is very accurate but shooting it in the Redhawk was like trying to stay on a bucking bronc! It was fun to shoot in the late evening. That H-110 shot fire ten feet out in front of the 7.5" Redhawk! I'm getting to old for that sort of thing! I wont be shooting any loads like that in my 29!

Yes, that is one of them - and it is a darned good one. I also use the old H&G #326, which casts to about 276 grains.

In 44s I prefer not to use gas-check bullets unless I have to, so the #326 gets more use. But, as you say, either one of those can be a handful in a Model 29, as far as I am concerned, and I get more convinced of that every time I empty out a box.

That little Universal Clays load is tame - just shoots a bit high in my guns. Averages 957 FPS in the 29-2 I was shooting and had just over 50 FPS of spread for six rounds. Very similar to Elmer Keith's old 8.5-grs Unique load he used to recommend for short-range target shooting.

4" 686

A while back, my 31 year old grandson moved to Kennewick, WA, and I sent my 6" 686 with him. The other day, I got a chance to buy a 4" and it seemed like a good idea! What do you think? I've been buying a lot of "N" frames so decided to try a smaller gun. It's to be a shooter. I haven't received it yet but I have one pic of the seller's. I'll take more later.

You will like it. L-frames have always been very accurate guns, for me anyway. I have more experience with 586s than 686s, but I have a 686 similar to yours and it does a great job. I'll be surprised if you don't find it very easy to shoot well. :)

The long barrel on a 27 is a work of art.
I've been hooked ever since getting mine.
Hold on to it, in case you catch the bug as well.

I have two 6" 586s. One is nickle, which I shoot occasionally, and a blue one which is an NPRC presentation revolver that was not used for it's intended purpose. It is blue with gold engraving. I bought it from a fellow in Michigan and it's unfired. I think this 4" 686 will make a good holster gun, too.
I don't have an 8 & 3/8" Mod 27, anymore. I sold it long ago. I do have a Mod. 57 with the long barrel, though.

Win 158 gr JHP .38 Special

Hey Fellers!
Had a beautiful 68° sunny, calm day, today! So I took my chopped Mod. 27, 5" out for a shoot. I fired 20 rounds each in .38 Special of 153 gr.RCBS SW, 165 gr. RCBS SWGC and then 20 rounds of 200 gr. Lyman RN in .357 Mag.. They all grouped about like usual. Then, to finish off I fired 20 Rounds of 158 gr. Win JHP in .38 Special, with 4.7 gr. of Unique. WOW! Was I ever pleased! I probably don't shoot jacketed pistol bullets over two or three times a year These babies all cut the 10 ring but one! This doesn't mean I'm going to give up casting bullets and start shooting jacketed bullets exclusively, but it sure showed me what the Chopper could do! All of the above were shot off sandbags at 25 yards,
Hope you're all getting plenty of shooting time!

Fine sunny day in Kansas!

Hey, Shooters!
Haven't been on this one in a while! We had 54°, calm and bright sun today so I took the chopped 5" Mod. 27 out to shoot a target. These were loaded with the 153 gr. cast RCBS and 4.7 gr. of UV Clays. I didn't do as well as the last post! But I don't think it's just the difference in the jacketed and cast bullets. I'm just getting rusty, not enough range time lately!
I hope everyone else is getting in some shooting!
Dick

I know in my own case that whenever I see vertical stringing on a target like that it is usually a case of old eyes not zeroing in on that front sight and keeping it right where it should be as the hammer falls. :o

Looks like that load wants to shoot. Maybe give it another try?

Joel,
I'm sure you're right. I recently switched from shooting with my right eye to shooting with my left because I can see much clearer through it. I think I was hit in that eye with a wood chip once, while cutting fire wood. I still shoot with my right hand but sight with my left eye. I can tell a difference since then but I can see the target much better. I have a 91 year old friend that told me a long time ago that getting old wasn't for cowards! I understand what he meant more all the time! But I'm sure it beats the alternative!

Chopper, back again!

Well, Shooters!
It's cold and rainy, today, we even had snow in the area, so nothing to do except post some targets I shot a couple days ago! I haven't had the chopped 27-2 out in a while so I decided to try some different loads in it. Not real good, but respectable. I've found it's hard to find a load that works well in all my .38/.357s. Close is good enough, I guess? What do you think?

.357 Mag., 172gr. Keith, 12 gr. 2400, off sandbags.

Hopefully, the low temp today, 75°, signals the end of a long hot spell lately! 90s and a few days over 100! Since I hadn't had the Chopper out in a while, I decided to try one of my old favorite reloads! Lyman cast 172 gr. Keith bullet over 12 gr. of 2400. It worked just as well as it always has in other guns over the years!
Great fun!

Dick, did you ever try your load with Universal powder again? It looked like it had possibilities but another test was definitely in order to see if it was actually throwing flyers or if the shooter was to blame. ;)

The #2400 load is always a good one. You just can't beat #2400 in the .357, in my opinion. I make a similar load using the old H&G #051 bullet that I buy locally. I can't recall the charge weight now but it is a real shooter in my favorite 6-inch Model 19. I need to load a few. Last time I checked the supply was a little low. :)

4.7 UV and 153 gr. RCBS SW in .38 Special.

Yes I have, Joel.
I've loaded quite a few with this load andit works pretty well with several of my .38/.357 guns. Have been playing with it in my .41 Mag., .44 Special and .44 Mag. guns, too. It works pretty well in them all but I think I prefer Unique over it, though. I think you can contribute most of the flyers to my poor shooting!

As much as I hate to see a classic gun arbitrarily modified, I'm glad you were able to reclaim this one. Enjoy it.

Hi Dick, glad you still have and shoot this gun. It looks great with the Weigand front sight. This is a long running post and was fun. You have a nice collection of 27's. Larry
