Chopping a S&W Model 29

Thanks guys for all the great information, I carry a 29-2 appendix carry every day with a 6 inch barrel 5 inch barrel is more comfortable on horseback I will roll in the 4 inch barrel instead of cutting.

That's another consideration; the short barrels look better on the round butt frames. Yours would have the square butt being a 6".

I re-contoured the butt of a 4" model 29-2 from square to round, and it came out pretty nice. I would not cut the barrel of a 4", but I would cut a longer one to 4.5 for sure.

I say go for it. Do it now. In my experience "someday" may never come. Just find a good 'smith and have it done properly. Now that I'm gimpy and on disability I can't afford the things I put off until "someday" and now it's "I should have."

I recently cut my 29-2 (8 3/8") to 4.5", personally, I think its an improvement but this pistol had no sentimental value as it was.

I wouldn't have done it if it was a 6" or less.

Whatever you do, have a good gunsmith or really talented amateur do the work. Either way, you'll end up with something different that hopefully you will really like. Just remember though that anything you do will probably lessen the value of the original unless you find someone who shares your taste. I've seen really good custom work by a known smith go begging at what the original should have been worth. That said a lot of my revolvers have visible custom work, predominantly having been round butted before everything came that way.
