Civilization?

When I was a kid it was how far you were from a Sears store. That was where we bought most appliances. clothes, tools etc. If it was more than an hour you were in the boonies.

If you used that measure today most of us are far from civilization. Funny how things change over time.

I think Wally World took their place.

Civilization is where most folks treat you as they would like to be treated, regardless of whether professional law enforcement is near or far. It probably doesn't have much to do with population density, and it may have something to with religion.

In many areas, a sane person doesn't go out without food and water any more than he goes out without a pistol, a knife, and a lighter, but that has to do with physical environment, not civilization.

I figure if it has indoor plumbing, it must be fairly civilized.:D

I think that the rest rooms in this pic is close to civilisation.

As for cell coverage, the only places we lost it in 2018 was western Texas, near El Paso, Down NM-80 south of rodeo and in Tennessee between Knoxville and Chatanooga.

I guess that means the US is pretty civilised.

Parts of west Texas are pretty remote, but the far Western states are really remote.

This sign has caused many a biker to swallow hard and most tourists to look at it in utter disbelief. It's on Highway 6 about four miles east of Tonopah, Nevada heading towards Ely. It used to read "Next gas 100 miles", but that gas station went broke. I've never driven the full length of this road, but looking at the terrain maps I'll bet there are a lot of places with no cell reception.

I recall an article in MAD Magazine years ago which asked:
"Is your greatest fear of a Communist takeover that you might be sent to Siberia, which you understand is a fringe reception area?"

There is a county in our state that has no stop lights no industrial facilities and very spotty cell service. If something were to happen to my wife while I am still physically able to move I am moving to one of the more remote areas of that county. Then i figure I will be right where I want to be as regards civilization.

We have family in the hills of Southern Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and drive through the mountains of Pennsylvania! Once off the Interstate, Cell service is spotty, at best!

There are a couple of towns I've been in W. Va. and Ky., where Moonshine is easier to buy than gasoline! They may or may not be civilized, but I never mention it to the locals (including family!)

I live in a county (In Florida of all places) that has only one redlight!

If I tell you "meet me at the redlight", it's at the intersection of US 129 and SR 26 in Trenton, Fl.:)

I won't comment as to whether or not we're civilized here....:D

Lots of country around here has no cell service, there are plenty of road signs with bullet holes. In fact I would bet the majority of those on gravel roads have holes in them. I myself have never "bagged" one. If you see a sign that says OPEN RANGE, it means that the cattle in the area are NOT fenced in and WILL get on the road. Lots of areas with less than 1 person per square mile, 12 counties in fact have less than 1 per sq mile. 40 of the state's 56 counties have less than 5 per square mile. Our McDonald's is out of order due to one thin dime. The next closest one is well over 100 miles away.

Define civilization. I always think about the ignorant savages in the south Pacific during WWII and how impressed they must have been when the "civilized" nations showed up with bombs, machine guns artillery and flame throwers. We hold ourselves out as a highly civilized first world nation. After all we have enough nuclear weapons to destroy it. In 2018 we had a population of 327 million and the number of emergency department visits for assault was 1.2 million. Alrighty then
