What is the proper way to clean a firearm prior to using a wax on it. Do you degrease it in any way to remove gun oil or just wipe it off and wax it?

O/P, I give my firearms a good deep cleaning, being careful not to get any oil on any part this is going to be waxed. Then a GOOD wipe down with a CLEAN cotton rag. Finally I apply by hand two thin coats of wax, buffing between coats.

All this takes a little extra time, but I believe that the results are well worth the effort.

Ren Wax/Pre-Lim

Renaissance Wax Makes a product that acts as a degreased called Pre-Lim, typically found on Amazon and it is a little pricey but works well to remove any build up of petroleum products. It is a light brown color and as a result will get in areas such as the barrel roll and stamped print that will cause a little more work to remove with a toothbrush. Get to it when it if fresh. It does a great job of preparing your gun for the final application of Ren Wax, not a bad process since you only have to use it the first time. I also found Frog Lube Degreaser to be a excellent preparation for the Rem Wax. Downside it is pricey, upside it is a clear product that goes on and wipes off easily, is a green product I can use indoors without any odor or flammable issues. Only use acetone outdoors and always know where you have pilot lights as all it takes is to forget and walk by one with an old acetone soaked rag and it will flash. There are much safer means to clean up petroleum build up. I use a gun patch to apply both products and the key to applying both is easy does it, a nice thin coat is all that is required for the best results, No need to let it sit to long, a few minutes and your firearm is sealed and protected. I add a coat when I clean up after firing my gun and it makes clean up so much easier. The Ren Wax also brings a pair of old grips back to life while your at it. Good Luck

aerosol brake cleaner will degrease and prep for wax, you'll want to reapply oil in the works after you're finished waxing.

How about nickel? I assume you've used alcohol on blued guns as most are blued.......

Thanks,
Bob

Nickel, too:
