I recently inherited a Model 29-2 (S serial number) from my grandfather. As far as we know it's been fired 6 times. It is in pristine condition, but was stored in the blue felt box it's whole life. There is small spot of rust in the valley between the lug and barrel. There is also some green corrosion on grip medallions. Is there anything that I can use to try and clean that off? If not, I've been looking at a set of Kurac grips for it. I'll take some pics and post them this afternoon. Here is one (with the Woodsman that came with it) from when I received it. Thanks.

I would stick to a soft toothbrush, if it doesn't come off with that maybe a very tiny dab of polish. The medallions are brass with a very thin nickle plate - it doesn't take much to remove the nickle and expose the brass.

Real easy to over polish the medallions making the logo soft.I love flitz polish, but for this job I prefer using a Cape cod cloth.

I would try cleaning the S&W monograms with a soft toothbrush and a little Clenzoil. If you have to resort to Flitz, be very careful to not remove the thin nickel plating.

Thanks all. I'll try the toothbrush method first. I'd like to clean them and keep them. I found a set of Kurac grips that I want and I'll get them as well. I plan on shooting it :) I've been a semi-auto guy but the revolver bug has bite me hard. I've owned a few over the years but this 29-2 has shown me what a quality piece should be. Over the last two weeks I've picked up a 625 "Model of 1989", a 19-3 and a 66-3. The 66-3 will become my new carry gun once I change out the grips and prove it out. This forum is bad...for the wallet.

The green stuff will come off easily using a q-tip and either Acetone or goo-gone (adheasive , orange cleaner)

BE CAREFUL, Like Doc44 said the Flitz will remove the nickel plating on your grips VERY quickly !

Great pair there !

I once saw some Army shooters at Camp Perry back in the late 70's using Coca Cola and Q-Tips to clean grip panel medallions. I asked the old timer I was walking with how that worked and he told me it was an old brass buckle trick and it was the phosphoric acid in Coke that brightened brass.

Get the Kurac grips for shooting but take care of those grips. They should stay with the gun and they are quite valuable by themselves.
Nice pair of guns from your GF.
