Just bought a model 36 1 inch blue at a gun show and want to clean it.
Any suggestions on what products to buy, since its a blue finish.
Also wondering if anyone could tell me DOB on this baby, serial number#
418950 no letters or numbers after or before the number. The only number
I have is when you swing out the crane one side has mod. 36 and other side has 2314 stamped on it.

The gun should date to the mid-1960's. Barrels are measured from the face of the cylinder, so it's considered a 2" barrel (it may measure 1-7/8"). I like to pull the yoke and cylinder and clean the exterior with Hoppe's #9 and a nylon brush. I follow it with a preservative like CLP or gun oil.

2314 is an assembly number and you'll also find it on the left side of the grip frame. The right stock should be numbered to the gun.

Ditto the Hoppe's/nylon brush suggestion. --can't use enough Hoppe's!

If after wiping it dry, any area seems to be sort of dull -- soaked in firing residue -- Flitz cream polish can be useful in removing things without harming the finish. I'm working over some ex-guard guns that, even after the Hoppe's, didn't seem quite right. The cylinders and nearby frame areas were covered with a thin layer of brown powder residue that the Flitz removed with ease.

So it goes! Enjoy your 36!!

Careful with using Flitz on blued guns! I have used it to get stubborn lead fouling off the front of the cylinder, but it IS abrasive (albeit very, very fine abrasive) and it WILL remove bluing if used too aggressively.

I always used HOPPES #9 and recently the gun store buys sold me on Kleen Bore 3 in 1. I found it works pretty good as a solvent and leaves a residual coat the protects the gun too. They also pushed some synthetic EEZX It is also a 3 in 1. I found it cleans nicely, and the coating is supposed to penetrate the metal and protect it without an oily film. I have used that too and it seems to work well on my auto loaders as well as the revolvers. I have since gotten away from Hoppes....I dont know if its true but we had an armorer who really hated HOPPES and said it ruins the cartridges. I never had a problem with HOPPES.....so any of those good products is probably ok....
