Closet "utility" rifles...

Hey Gatorfarmer
My utility rifle is a BM-62, short, quick to handle and packs a good wallop and if not I've got 20 rounds to do the trick. Over here, west of you @ the base of the Beartooth Mountains, we've got more issues with the Griz than cows, though you've got to watch for both!

My utility rifles

I replaced that broken ejector in my long ago sporterized 1917, and it now kicks out spent brass with some authority when working the bolt. With 6 plus 1 .30-06 cartridges, it seems the old battle rifle still has a lot of years left.

For me, personally, I see my AR (and Mini 14) seperately from what I call my utility rifles. That is admittedly subjective, but there are furry things with here abouts that make something circa a .308 and up more comforting. Probably won't be needed, but nice to have from a working gun perspective.

A fan ? Darn right I am. A 1951 vintage (as near as I can determine) Yugo M48 Mauser, in the original chambering, for me. Re-barreled with a pristine spare Mauser barrel, cut to 17"....and stocked with a cut-down 1930's vintage military stock, re-worked to look like a pre-WW2 Mauser sporter. The rifle wears iron sights of my own design. With my handloads, I can produce 6" groups off-hand, at 100 yards.....and better off a rest.

The M48 is like an old friend. I've been shooting it for years and I know it inside and out, backwards and forwards. Makes me smile every time I pick it up and I can't even imagine ever getting rid of it. (No reason to anyway, as it is worth nothing.)

Probably have myself buried with that old rifle.....

I would like to use an M-1 Carbine as the house gun but they are priced completely out of my market.

Currently have in one closet upstairs is a Remington Wingmaster 12 ga loaded with 00 buck.

In another closet downstairs is a Rossi .357 20 inch barrel; a Rossi .22 pump model 62; a Mossberg 500 in 12 ga loaded with 00 buck.

Shotguns work for me. My Mossberg 590 Special Purpose has just about all the utility I need. It holds a mix of nine rounds of 00 Buck and 1 oz. slugs. We also keep a double barrel .410 handy for small pest issues that would be overkill for a 12 ga.

Guess mine would be an old .303 British Jungle Carbine I've had for years. Ridiculously accurate for what it is - a near-70 year old milsurp WWII era combat arm. With good handloads in either 150 or 170/180 weight and when i had a scope on it, groups of 1.5" are possible.

I use a Remington model 76, pump, 30-06 for my closet gun. I installed a six position collapsible stock for versatility.

I have a 10/22 TD and an 870 HD config (which I would break bones if I fired). The .308 is out for sale, as it draws my blood when I shoot it, regardless of what I might hit. Old age and cancer have cut my "arsenal" by 50% as I've sold the good stuff, and converted the proceeds into ineffective cancer meds at insane prices.

Force people to move real assets into speculative trials by grabbing the cash of people who are just trying to be alive just one more day. Ain't that America?

Rossi model 92 in 44 magnum. The ballistics on the .44 mag out of a 20 inch barrel out to 100 yds is pretty damn good making it a great home defense wepaon with 10 +1 round capacity.

H&R handi rifles in 223 45-70 and 30-30 are stashed around my house. They shoot well and address any problem I might face. They are light and compact and when they are 240$ brand new I don't mind leaving them outside the safe. The dirty thirty gets the nod for Swiss army gun do any thing carry in the truck or pasture work. Always hated carrying a good lever gun after I ran into a 94 that a horse had rolled in when it was in a saddle scabbard. Had to drift the sights half way out of the dove tails in opposite directions to get it with in a foot of zero. Kinda looked like one of the 2 by 4s you throw outa the pile at the lumber yard. Bought the handi to replace it and away I went.

I have one of the recent Remington made H&R .45-70s myself. I love that gun. Mine has a relatively short but thick and heavy bbl and good simple iron sights plus a thick recoil pad. I think they also make one with a long bbl that is known as the buffalo rifle. What is your .45-70 like?

As utility rifles, I have a Marlin .38/.357, a Marlin .44, a Marlin 99c tube fed .22, a Winchester M62a pump .22 and a Steven 311c double barrel 12 gauge that the barrel has been cut to 18.5 inches. I like them all, but the 12 gauge kicks like a mule on steroids.
