CMP 1911 Arrived!

Almost every thread brings out detractors. I remember the run up to the release of these guns, the wailing and gnashing of teeth.
I am pleased to know that I will eventually get a chance to own another piece of our history, just as important (to me) as the many Garands and 1903’s I was able to purchase previously from the CMP.

An entry level GI clone from Kahr or RIA (the RIA one has the gaudy lettering in white on the slide) is what, $500? You think a 75 year old weapon that was issued to American GI’s should cost as much as a clone made in either Brazil or the Philippine’s?

Is the price high? Maybe a tad. To even get these things the CMP has to jump through many hoops. Building a separate building and vault to house them. Staff to sort and grade them. Staff to go through 19,000 applications and verify their correctness, then individually call everybody to get payment and ship the guns. Some of the guns will be rack and field grade which will cost less, but be in worse condition. I wasn’t interested in those.

I’m normally a pretty frugal guy. Sold off a few guns I had to pay for this piece of history. But to me, there’s no comparison between a foreign made budget MIM parts having GI clone to a gun that has been there and done that. Whether it stormed the beach at Normandy or guarded Quonset huts filled with dirty GI underwear, it did so while on the hip of an American GI. And that is enough to warrant the couple hundred bucks more than you feel they are worth, to me.

That and darn it; THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A "BAD" 1911, especially a USGI one...
ENJOY it!
:p:D

Numbers sent out

Numbers from the CMP have reached over the 8000 mark, so those of us with out a number yet the wate will be longer..

Actually I see that they are up to 11,186 now, and the following message is being attached:

This email is to notify you that your order has been received and you have been assigned a number through the random number generating process. You will find your number listed below. At this time, we do not have enough 1911 type pistols to complete your order. Should the Army send us another shipment of sufficient quantity, we will use those 1911 type pistols to fill the next orders in line. Please do not contact us or reply to this email at this time.

So those higher than the mid 8 thousands are being told they will go to the head of the line with the next shipment. And the GAO report sounds really good, so I don't see why there will not be another shipment coming.

Best Regards, Les

I agree. I was one of those detractors for a while. I wasnt expecting agun in this condition. Guys were saying the ones they were issued in the 80’s were junk. The one I got sure isn’t. Happy with my purchase.

Agree. Would t have minded owning a budget 1911. But for a few hundred more to have the real thing is worth it to me. I might even pick up a budget 1911 at some point, if nothing else but to share magazines.

As the proud owner of random number 10809, I am solidly in next year’s draw. I am actually hoping for one of the lower grades, not to save money but to increase my chances of getting a salty old beater. I love the ANAD rebuilds and would happily take one, but a raggedy mixmaster is more my thing. I haven’t seen anything but Service Grades show up yet. Maybe the next batch will have some dogs to love.

I think the vast majority of these guns are going to be Service Grade. Bear in mind that many had just come out of being arsenal reworked and were placed in storage for possible future issue if needed.
While there may be a few special guns that will end up in auction, I believe that the "beater" Field and Rack grades are actually gonna be the scarce ones.

I shot it today. 21 rounds of my 230 grain reloads. Half lead and half plated. All functioned fine. Freezing cold and icy so picked a spot in the snow at 10 yards and let it rip. Made a nice crater in the snow.

So now to crank out a good supply of .45 for the spring. And either add an M&P 2.0 .45 or a cheap GI clone to keep the mileage low on this 75 year old beauty. And I’ve cleaned and oiled it twice now. Looks much better. Not so bone dry.
