CMP 1911 Arrives!

I put this on a 1911 forum, so if you read it there, this is pretty much the same thing. Back in April, after seeing others CMP pistols, decided I would put my name in the lottery, and a few days ago, got the call, was offered all three grades of pistols, so chose a "Service" grade, the top grade. I carried a 1911 sidearm in RVN for a year and for a few months in the Desert Storm war, both were a real pain to keep from rusting away. Only shot the first one for fun, and the day a chopper came to pick me up, fired off my last mag, and had a Squib!

Picked it up two days ago, and shot it today in the Mid Carolina heat. Mine has a 1980's fully hardened slide, and a Remington frame, about 200K guns from the last of that company's production in 1945. A really nice gun, trigger is without creep, and a near breaking glass let off at about 6 and a half pounds. Surprisingly, the slide is like ball bearings, and tight. Small sights of course, but absolutely accurate. Nice case too, although don't know what I will use the case for. Cleaned the barrel, had more carbon on the patches than I would suspect from just some test firing. It really is a nice handgun, and I will enjoy shooting it with my military rig. So, here it is.....

Very nice! I did the same thing, sent my paper work in this past April, got the call and picked my CMP 1911A1 up last week, I selected a service grade, I got a 1943 Colt frame and a 1943 Remington Rand slide, it was refurbished sometime after WWII, new parts and new barrel, all looks like new.

I was in round 1 with a low lottery number. 1944 Colt frame and mid 1950's civilian Colt slide. Service grade. Some purists turn their nose up at the replacement slide and reparkerization, but that's all part of its legitimate military history. My gun hung on the hips of American GI's for 3 decades until it was overhauled in 1976. WW2, Korea, Vietnam happened in those 30 years. I'd take this gun over any new 1911. I just wish I had gotten in on the M1 carbine lottery when it happened.

The ones in VN were older than I was. I passed on getting one from the CMP as I have 3 current 1911's.

A couple decades ago, a military 1911 assembled by an armorer from parts, known as "mixmasters", were snubbed by collectors. Today, even mixmasters command a pretty good penny.

I got mine in the 1st. lottery. US&S frame, Colt 1944 slide.
1986 markings from Anniston. "R" marked magazine.

Pretty darn good shooter, I like it.

Mine is virtually identical. 1st go round. If they ever open it up to repeats I'd buy again.

Gambled and ordered a Rack Grade in Round 2. Received a matching Remington Rand 2.2M S/N that appeared to be all correct except for a WW1 Colt slide stop and late grips. Still had a very good HS barrel. I think it was graded as a RG because it had a lot of holster wear. FOIA revealed it last served with the NC ARNG, so I know it spent a lot of holster time and was fired once yearly for weapons qualification.

I would certainly entertain another if CMP ever allows repeat buyers.

That looks like a nice 1911A-1. I bought mine from the CMP auction, got a nice 1939 Colt. I've seen a number of CMP pistols in person, and I have yet to see one I wouldn't have been happy with. Hopefully they'll allow a second pistol at some point, I'd still like to try for a US&S to go with my Colt, Remington and Ithaca.

I got a Remington Rand frame and Colt slide. I was only given one option when I got the call in May 2023.

Round 1 recipient here. Colt slide, RR frame service grade. Nothing to write home about. I field stripped it, cleaned it up, oiled the working parts and put it in my climate controlled safe without shooting it. My only safe queen.

I carried one in the Navy on watches and shore patrol. Glad I was able to snatch one. Brings back some memories.

Yours looks better than mine. Your slide is heat treated, mine isn't.

DCM 1911A1

Received mine in August of 2022 from Round 2. Remington Rand slide, Ithaca frame and the highest grade available at that time.
I thought the price, at the time, was a little high but, they are truly a bargain.

It shoots to the point of aim and the first fifty plus rounds that I put through it and others there after have been flawless.

jdlii- I have the other half of your gun: RR frame, Ithica slide. Rack grade looks ok shoots great. 1944 production on the frame, so it was probably there for D-Day

I got a nice one from the 1st lottery but by the time they got it to me the second lottery had started and I got picked for it also. But they realized that they had just shipped me one and did not send me the second one.

I missed Round 1 when everybody said they were clapped out rusted junk. By the time I saw pics it was too late. 2022 came along and I jumped in and got a Field grade with Ithaca frame and a RR slide. Bonus painted rack number on the stocks. Round 3 my wife wanted to know what to ask for. I told her Service Grade. Hopefully you will get an "all Colt". I told her that they frowned on special requests beyond grade. When they called her she told them Service and then said something to the girl hoping that she gets an "all Colt" and can have a better gun than her husband.
The girl at CMP laughed and said she would see what she can do.

Two days later we had the cleanest All Colt. It had been shipped all over the world but certainly not used much.

Very nice Service Grade SF Vet!

My CMP Round 3 Service Grade came in with a very nice Colt slide on a just as nice RR frame. I don't agree with some that just because a firearm comes through the CMP that it automatically has any historical value or particular provenance . My premise is that guns coming out of the CMP are mostly parts guns anyway, so mixing and matching parts is no big deal.

So, I came across a gentleman who had a very nice RR slide that matched my RR frame and he very much wanted my Colt slide. After we inspected each other's slides we decided on a trade and I now have a very nice RR slide from the same date period mated to my nice RR frame.

Was fortunate to get a 43 RR slide and frame round one and wife got a matching Colt 43 in round 2! Hers is Rack and mine is Service! Guess which one is much truer to the period! The Colt!

Got the call today for my Round 4 opportunity. Ordered a rack grade, and should have it within a week.

The CMP is now allowing the purchase of two pistols, as long as you haven't purchased one this year. Might have to get another one in 2024.
