Coin collectors?

I collected US for a fairly long time. Especially liked them Bo Dollars, Silver Dollars. Was around Reno and Vegas, got them for a $1! Didn’t get as many for $1 as I should have!
Then Got distracted by other things- SEA, marriage, kids, spurge (invasive weed), deer hunting, gun collecting, etc.
My Coin Collection wound up in the bottom of my Gun Safe.
Later on I started stacking.
A while back my Granddaughter expressed an interest in Coin Collecting.
I gifted her an old Mexican Shaving Kit half full of Lincoln Pennies and a Blue Book. But She moved onto to other things!

I only have one. A Ptolemy IV Circa 400 BC. It is Bronze, about Liberty Dollar size in diameter and about 5/16" thick. Not sure of the rating, but the curls on Zuse's hair are barely worn. Value unknown. I've been caretaker for almost 56 years.

I was a collector back in the 80's and 90's. Specialized in Carson City coins. Gave them all to my daughter plus the safe. Never regretted it. Had 13 silver dollars, several halved, quarters and dimes. Wonder what they are worth now?

Carson city coins have really shot up in value in the past few years.

I've been into coins practically from birth. My great grandparents gave me a Morgan Silver Dollar and a 1952 Franklin Half Dollar when I was born. I still have them.

I think coins are works of art. To me Morgan Silver Dollars are absolutely beautiful.

When the Sacawajea dollars came out I practically jumped for joy. Then friend gave me an album for holding the Presidential dollar coins and now I have it filled up. It sure feels a lot heavier.

I've collected coins practically my whole life, and now I enjoy spreading around the Golden Dollars. I'm known for doing that in a lot of American Legion and VFW lounges.

Can you still get them at the bank? I think I have a few in my golf bag that were ball markers

I collect both coins and currency. Most recent additions were the 2024 Mogan and Peace dollars.

I collected a few when I was a lad. Dad did the same when he was younger, although he also bought proof sets back some 50+ years ago. I have kept most of the coins he had stashed in the file cabinet at the house. Was surprised by how many Canadian pennies he had.

My parents did back in the 50-60’s. When my mother passed in 2001 the coins became mine. Pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars.
I haven’t added anything since then, as I dont know anything about values today.

One of my wife’s cousins buys coin sets and such from the US Mint.

I inherited a fair number of coins from my father, including and impressive collection of Australian half pennies and pennies. He also had a nice collection of stamps. I have researched the Australian coins some. The stamps are a whole different animal.

I had a pretty good selection of US silver coins for quite a few years (about $2K face value). Then one day the steel door from back yard to garage was broken into, steel door from garage to house was smashed through, just about everything easily transported was gone.

A hint for collectors and investors: Most home insurance policies treat these coins as cash, typically with a low policy limit ($200 is common). A very collectible US silver dollar worth hundreds is still considered to be one dollar. If you are into such things it might pay to visit with your insurance agent about increasing coverage limits, or scheduled property endorsements.

I have coins from every foreign country I've visited, as well as a few outliers that I've gotten over the years. The oddball coin I have is from "Deutsch Ostafrika". It was a German colony until 1918, and is now Tanzania. My Great-grandfather took it from a German POW in WW1 and I have it now.

I have had a manic interest in coins & currency most of my life.. parents enjoyed collecting and as a kid I collected nickels.. enpanded to all coins later on.. lost interest and tucked them away.. started again with the states quarters with my little son... I kept almost every single one since the beginning and would sort them with my son on rainy days... when the mother-in-law passed my son inherited the coin collection.. his grandfather was a WWII Navy veteran from the late war in the Pacific.. lots of occupation coins and other international coins... favorite of mine is the large penny my paternal grandfather had from his time in WWI as a sergeant in an ambulance corp... all a fascinating, but mostly they just sit in a safe.

This got me to looking at the stuff in my desk drawer, hadn't looked at it in a few years. Lincoln sets, #1 only about half full, #2 full. Washington States Quarters, Vol 1 two sets full, Vol 2 two sets complete.
Oddball paper money, Silver Cert's 1's and 5's, red label $2 bills.Mint Jamaica $2 and 50c. Military "paper" Nickle., Italy 5 Lire (paper). Plus a bag full of various European coins.

Have no idea if any of this has any value other than face value. I don't imagine the quarters have much if any over face.

I just sold bunch of old film camera's and pocket knives, should have remembered these, buyer may have been interested in these also.

My Grandpa was an avid collector. He bought me a Whitman penny book in 1959 and filled it with as many of the spares he had.

I graduated from the 8th grade in 1963 and received a $20 bill as a gift. I went to the bank on Friday when Dad cashed his paycheck and bought $20 in pennies. Checked them all and kept what I needed. Next week I traded them in for $20 in nickels. Then dimes and quarters and back to pennies again.

At some point I started saving ALL wheaties, and then later ALL copper pennies when they switched to zinc.

Just for fun once I bought a roll of silver dollars. To my amazement it was an uncirculated roll of 1921 dollars. I only kept one. (dumb me) I also came across 2 uncirculated rolls of 1943 steel pennies. I DID keep them.

I often went to a coin shop with Grandpa, where he would look for items he needed. Believe it or not, the best shop to browse for US coins was over the border in Canada.

Times are tough now. My purchases are 99% made with a credit card, so coins are not often received. Now I only collect nickels and pennies, and I have to buy the new dates off EBay.

My sons started with me, but eventually lost interest. I imagine that the hobby won't flourish in the future.
